I am a newbie and am in canada with a non activated phillips tivo box...help me!!

Hi I am a newbie and have dtv and just bought a tivo box. I live in Toronto, Canada and am trying to figure out how to unlock the tivo box so I can tape shows while i am away. It keeps poping up "final step" when i try to record and then tries to make a phone call, and of course because i am north of the boarder it never works. I need someone to lead me in the right direction so i can unlock (activate) this tivo box so it works, and of course for free too.

The tivo box is an integrated phillips dtv tivo 6000
