Gotta be more specific, what do you want to do? A stand alone lets you record off cable or antenna as well, but the picture quality isn't as good as a DirectTivo. Stand alones don't record Dolby Digital either.

The new series-2 stand alone hasn't been hacked yet.

A stand alone Tivo has a built-in cable-ready tuner, but no DirectTV tuner. You need to use a separate DTV box. It also compresses the data and therefore the picture quality isn't as good as the DirectTivo's. And like I said, it can't handle Dolby Digital, and can only record one thing at a time.

There are 3 DirectTivo's, the Philips and Hughes, which are identical in their operation, and the Sony which has a different remote and a few different features regarding the save to VCR function.
