hi guys-

i'm a newbie and i've done a ton of reading lately. i have a few quick things i cant figure out:

1) do i need linux installed on my computer to do any of this?

2) Bash prompt.... thats when you get a prompt by logging into the tivo using the serial cable right? why is that called bash anyway?

3) after i setup the 2.5 extreme....how do i access the bash prompt? do i have to press a certain key when i turn on tivo?

4) i know i use teraterm to access it. but in the tivo tutorial i also see the program Dos2Unix listed...what is that for?

5) last thing, how is the bash prompt useful? what can you put on the tivo from there and how do you put it on?

thanks to everyone for the great forums! thanks for the help!!!

NO

YES/Buy a *nix book

3) after i setup the 2.5 extreme....how do i access the bash prompt? do i have to press a certain key when i turn on tivo?

Through serial port with x-over cable

4) i know i use teraterm to access it. but in the tivo tutorial i also see the program Dos2Unix listed...what is that for?

D2U strips carriage returns from DOS files so they work properly on *nix.

READ, READ, then read some more.
