Hi all, before I go off an buy a Turbonet card
to replace my existing TiVoNet card, does
anybody know how to maximise the network data
transfer rate to/from the TiVo?

Currently I'm getting about 350Kbyte/s from my
Unix box to the TiVo via NFS using 10Mbps
TiVoNet. I'm using rsize=wsize=2048.

What sort of speeds are people getting with
100Mbps Turbonet? with SMBFS? with other NFS
options?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Supposedly, TurboNet maxes out at 13Mbps... just 30% higher than TiVoNet. The main reason to go with TurboNet, I felt, was that the network card was all built-in, so you didn't risk plugging in an incompatible ne2000 card.

Also, NFS is pretty inefficient. SMBFS (judging from my use of it on other non-tivo machines) is even less efficient.

I'd use FTP. Granted, the ftp daemon that you get for the TiVo is pretty stripped down, you can still get what you want done with it....

Using tytool and a tivonet adaptor, I got ~900kbps.

Using tytool and a turbonet adaptor, I get ~1.1 to 1.3mbps.
(1.5mbps with the unit in standby)

Some have gotten a faster transfer than that by editing out the "un-necessary" jobs in the rc.sysinit file. I have'nt tried it myself. I'm running as close to "stock" as you can get!

I never got any higher than 400kbps with either adaptor using nfs or samba. (for simple file transfers, netcat or just simple ftp does much better.)

Roughly 1.1 Mbps using Turbonet and a crossover cable (no hub/switch/etc.) through Tytool4. You can tweak it a bit if you're lucky by using different "timing=.." parameter values for the ax88796.o module, but then you have to replace the binary in 3.0 with Nick Kelsey's original module (the one shipped with 3.0 doesn't take the timing parameter). The default is 6, lower is faster. The 1.1 Mbps above is with a timing of 6. The "lucky" bit refers to your particular turbonet card. FTP maxes out at about 880 kbps.
