View Full Version : Repeatable Green Screen of Death case with TurboNet
I accidentally discovered a repeatable GSoD case on my DSR6000. If I follow these steps, I'll get a GSoD every time. I thought it might be handy if anyone with more information than I have to figure out exactly what's causing it. Note that this has nothing to do with the drive itself being bad. I've even tried it on two different drives with exactly the same results.
1. Hardware DSR6000, TurboNet and one Seagate Baraccuda IV 80GB.
2. Install 25Xtreme image on the B4 drive.
3. Place drive in DTivo and let it go ahead and finish it's upgrade. Everything should be working correctly after this point.
4. Take the drive back out and install the TurboNet modules using the boot CD at http://www.silicondust.com/terms_of_use.html
5. After putting the drive back in the Tivo, you'll get a GSoD during boot.
6. Repeat to taste... ;)

Have you ever let the Tivo sit for an extended period after getting the green screen? A lot of times the Tivo will recover from the green screen on its own. Also, did you try installing Kraven's 2.5Xtreme update after installing 2.5Xtreme on your DSR6000 but before you installed TurboNet? I assume you are using the correct image for the DSR6000 and not the image for the Sony SAT-T60, correct?
I didn't do Kraven's update, but it really doesn't look like any of the things he added/moved would affect this.
It's definitely the correct image. I've had the DTivo running for several months already, and this situation only came up because of some other testing I was doing.
As for recovering: it DOES recover eventually. However, the last time I let it do the recovery, it only ended up getting the GSoD again the next time I rebooted.
Also, the point here is that I'm wondering exactly what it was about the TurboNet install that caused the GSoD to happen in the first place. I figured that learning what that was might give some insight into why other people are getting it in other situations. Obviously if the TurboNet install happened to muck with the MFS partition unsuccessfully you'd probably end up with a GSoD, but as far as I know the install doesn't do that.
Like I said, though - I'm hardly an expert on these things...

the number one questiuon in my mind.. is how exactly are you "rebooting"?.. just pulling the plug? or using the reboot command from bash.. because after doing a 25xtreme install and not letting it sit powered on for at LEAST a few hours after the first boot, and pulling the power is a guarenteed GSOD...
Interesting point. I've used the "Restart Receiver" option in the Setup menu, not the command line "reboot" command. I assumed this was as safe as the command line version.

ahh yes the infamous "Restart Receiver" ;) that should be fine, same as restart from bash... Ive heard of that but never seen the option myself.. i hope your not referring to "System Reset" because that is something completely different from what you want ;) but the thing i have found is even an hour or so after finishing the upgrade its still setting things up.. let it sit overnight after a 25xtreme install and the GSOD will not happen..
Well, I'll try and narrow down the conditions a bit more if I have time (big "if").
Love the icon, by the way... :)
