Sounds interesting. I'm not sure I want lower quality and fit more onto a VCD though.

based on what I read ... it's better quality.

From what I read, primarily, the templates modify these few things:

Use half of the resolution instead of full resolution.
Use lower bitrate.
Use lower quality (lower CQ).
Use VBR instead of CBR for some template.
Use longer GOP.

For certain instances, the quality could be better providing you're storing about the same mins of video in a CD (comparing apple to apple), due to VBR and longer GOP. For 120 mins in a CD, you have to do 24fps, half resolution, much lower bitrate, longer GOP, and much lower quality (lower CQ). I don't see how it could have better quality.

never mind ...

my original question was, has anyone TRIED these... it is clear you have not, and are only making judgments based on opinion.

I'm encoding/ burning from a .ty file right now... so it's a mute point.

Yea, I know. That's why my orginal statement stated that I probably would not try it due to what I have read.

I'm also putting the ty files onto DVD directly. Even I do transcode them due to the GOP error that Spruce/Maestro don't like, I transcode them into 1/2 D1 (352x480) with VBR 3000K.

could you explain further?

directly? transcode via->what? TMPEG after a vsplit? how do you do it directly?

Sorry, i didn't really mean directly. My "directly" actually just mean without transcoding. It is just the usual fakeout method using DVDPatcher that everyone uses.

For the GOP error files, just like you guessed, I use TMPEGenc to transcode it after the vsplit.
