View Full Version : How Do I Use the Readbytes Command?

I'm a newbie, and this sounds fairly boneheaded to even me.

On another thread about checking to see if noscramble had run, a knowledgeable poster saidt that all TIVO's directories contained the readbytes command (which can be used to check the kernal to see if noscramble was permanently performed). However, I can't find it anywhere (pretty sure I checked all directories in the root and subdirectories, including /var).

I used the ISO Image CD linked on 9th Tee's Turbonet web page to gain access to my drives, so I may be missing a lot of commands in various directories. Anybody know of a way to load extra commands and modules up without having to reattach the A and B drives to a computer (I actually have a laptop so I don't have IDE ports at home)?

Any help is greatly appreciatedl.

rc:

On the post you linked, Alpha Wolf seemed to incdate that performing the command line (starts with "dd") would make the no scramble permanent. It was this for 2.5.2 systems:

dd if=/dev/hda6 of=/dev/hda6 bs=1 skip=468 seek=549788 count=2

That is supposed to patch the kernal.

We are to use the following readbytes command to find out if it worked:

readbytes /dev/hda6 549788 2

(returns 0x48 0x00 if Kernal patched, 0x40 0x86 if not patched)

But I don't seem to have readbytes in my Tivo drives, so I can't check.

Also, I have turnonet access. I just don't want to have to do anything that would require me to mount hte drives direclty to an IDE port again (can't do on my laptop at home), like run a new boot disk with the A drive attached as the primary device on the secondary IDE port.

I suppose another solution could be if someone posts a copy of readbytes for me to download into a directory to run.

I'm going to Alpha's no scramble Kernal patch file when I get home tonight that should change my rc.sysint file.

I wanted to see what the readbytes said anyway.

The zipped /var and /var/hack files I've seen don't have the readbytes command on there to copy into a directory on my TIVO.

I also tried to look at the Xtreme 2.5 ISO image, and I think, within that image are other images burned directly on A Drive. So I can't copy readbytes out of that either.

Can someone post a copy of it? (if its not huge) I will dos2unix and chmod +x it so it will run even if Windows converts it to text.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks.

The Kernal Patch worked perfectly.

So did the readbytes file you posted, and it sent back the correct output indicating the patch was working.

I appreciate the helpful info from everyone. Noscramble seems to be permanently installed.

I also have a couple of TIVO's running now through Tivoweb with internet access and this weeks setup was timed perfectly since I'm leaving on vacation and can't order a football game within 24 hours of kickoff (have to do it Friday night). I can Tivo it via the web.
