View Full Version : Kraven's 2.5 Upgrade install
I know you can install the 2.5 upgrade through bash, but is it also possible to do the install with the drive installed in my pc, as I do not know linux, i feel booting with a linux boot disk and doing whatever needs to be done will be easier for me, so if someone could point me in the right direction as how to do this that would be great.

Actually that isn't exactly true. It may have took me 2 or 3 hours the first time, to figure out how to add bash. There are very simple directions available today. The hardest/ most time consuming thing, may be building the cable. However, I've gotten lost several times for a couple of hours, by mounting a hard drive & not knowing what the hell I was doing.
BUT - Working with hack via a hard drive mounted in a PC is way more confusing. It looks like one big hard drive. You can easily get lost as to what directory your looking at, and if it exists in your dos drive, the linix boot directory, or the Tivo Hard drive? At least with bash, you are sure of where you are at. As a matter of fact, with extreme you already have bash. All you have to do is build the cable & install a program like Terra Term. I would have to argue that it is far easier & you will be able to find more "how to's" showing you how to do it this way. Please look into it. In the long run it will save you a LOT of time and trouble.
Otherwise, you can see a post by Animal Mother. I remeber that he did the hack the same way that you want to, but I don't think that he provided the details that you would need.
Thanks for the reply Groundhog, I have a bash cable, but my tivo is out for repair and i was redoing a new HD to put into it when it was returned, figured I might get a jump on things, I will checkout that post and start reading up on using bash, you had said that bash was already installed with 25xtreme so all I should need a copy of tera term on the pc to connect
Thanks

If the drive has never been in the Tivo, that's even a better reason not to mess with it. The way extreme works is that it flashes the prom on the tivo, then installs new 2.5 software. If you start messing with things before this happens, who knows how it might install? Kraven's upgrade is taylored towards an extreme image. If the drive hasn't actually been booted in a tivo, then it's not really a true extreme image.
