Recording - Cannot Boot Kernel

Has anyone come across or trouble shot the following? I selected a program to record overnight. When I turned on the TV this morning, it was in power up loop and I saw a message saying "Cannot Boot Kernel".

Most likely a bad power supply or hard drive.

Thanks Superzap. Any suggestions on how I would go about testing either to detremine which is giving me a hard time. I neglected to mention that I re-did extreme 2.5 becuase it acted up about one week ago.
