I got a copy of Kazymyr boot CD and made an image of my Dtivo with 2.5. I then restored the image back to a new 45GB IBM drive I had. When I install the IBM drive into the Tivo it will not get past the Welcome Powering Up screen. I have read a lot of posts that talk about this but I havent figured out a solution. This is probably because I am a complete and total newbie. A lot of the posts talk about the tivo rebooting continuously. I dont see it rebooting though. It just sits on the Welcome screen. I have checked the cable and the jumpers are set for master. When I did the backup I had my tivo drive as secondary master and a FAT drive as the primary master. I then removed the tivo drive and put the IBM in as secondary master. I read somewhere that if the new drive is not a quantum that I need to add a runideturbo=false to rc.sysinit. But it was for version 2. I am on 2.5. Do I still need to do this though? If I do then how do I do it?
EDIT: I tried to add the runideturbo=false line in rc.sysinit. I now get the Welcome Powering Up screen for 10 - 20 seconds and then it reboots constantly.
On a whim I downloaded a virgin image of 2.0. I restored this image to the same IBM drive and got the Welcome Powering Up screen and no reboots. I added the runideturbo=false line to rc.sysinit with the hopes of getting 2.0 to work. Still nothing past Welcome Powering up.
EDIT#2: I have no checked the jumpers. I tried it with the current MASTER setting and then as CS. It still keeps cycling the reboot loop. I tried creating a new image from my original drive and restoring it again. I then ran Dtivomad. After the 13 disk swaps I tried it again. Still endless rebooting! I tried the mad/edit_bootparms command and still keeps rebooting! I am pretty much now at the end of my patience with the whole upgrading TIVO deal. I am just going to deal with the 35 hours and be done with it.

I had trouble with one drive installed set to master. It might be coincindence, but try jumpering the drive to CABLE SELECT.
It worked for me.

If you loaded 2.5Xtreme and placed the drive back in the DTivo, the EPROM was flashed with the 2.5 update during the bootup sequence. The DTivo does not recognize the drive with 2.0 installed because the EPROM version and software version do not match which is why it will never get past the "Welcome. Powering up" screen. The 2.5Xtreme software image was derived from a 2-drive DTivo that was updated to 2.5 but right before it flashed the EPROM during the reboot that followed the installation. A fixed installation (i.e. an image of a DTivo drive) will not prompt the DTivo to reboot and flash the EPROM with the current software version, resulting in the mismatch.
Try reloading 2.5Xtreme on the drive and see if it boots. Sometimes 2.5Xtreme does not load correctly, resulting in the problem you are having. You could have a corrupted copy of 2.5Xtreme or a bad CD. If you can't get it to boot after reloading Xtreme, try downloading it again and burning a new CD. One other thing is to check the white ribbon cable connecting the power supply board to the mainboard. Remove the drive bracket and you'll see the cable underneath. Try reseating the cable in the connectors. Its got tinned contacts on each end and it just presses into the two connector housings.
The jumper setting can be left at either CS (default) or Master for a single-drive configuration. You also should not have to edit the rc.sysinit file for the runideturbo statement. This is prompted in the 2.5Xtreme setup because Quantum drives can sometimes be locked. You are prompted to respond whether or not it is a Quantum drive so the software can run a utility called qunlock.exe to unlock the Quantum drive.

I didnt load 25xtreme. I am only trying to make a backup of my A drive. I made an image with kazymyr's boot CD and then restored it to the new IBM. I want to make sure this works before I go any further. Eventually I want to get ppp over the serial port since my call is long distance.

Try reloading the image to the IBM. Sometimes it takes several attempts to get the image to load properly. If that doesn't succeed, make a new backup image of the original A drive and reload it again. If you're still having problems, check out the HowTos Only thread for a link to an ftp site that has original images from a DTivo. Download the one for your model and software version and load the image from that. Don't give up, you're going about it the right way. It's always a good idea to make sure you have a working backup before you proceed with any upgrade to ensure you can return the drive to its original configuration.
After rereading your original post I have to ask - was the original image of 2.5 upgraded by exposing the DTivo to the Tivo network? In other words, was the upgrade performed naturally and not loaded manually by you? If you manually loaded an image of 2.5 then there may be a problem with the EEPROM not being flashed correctly as I previously described. If 2.5 was already on the drive then you simply have a bad backup or a problem getting the backup to load on the other drive.
Make sure the total capacity of the IBM is at least as big as the original A drive. If its even the least bit smaller in capacity then you may be having a problem getting the image to load on the drive correctly. Check the total capacity using fdisk or partition magic or some other utility that will display the full size of the drive. You must be able to copy the entire image, block for block, to the replacement drive or you could be having problems due to an incomplete image. When you load the backup image to the new drive there is a progress message indicating XX of XX blocks being copied to the drive. Make sure that the number of blocks copied equals the total blocks upon completion.

The Tivo was upgraded to 2.5 through the Tivo service. I have never touched the thing as far as upgrading. I just want to eliminate the long distance call. I have another SA that I using PPP to get updates and want this one to as well. I was considering upgrading the thing with another HD but after all this trouble I am starting to reconsider. I really wish I had another HD to try. I notice that everyone seems to use Maxtor drives in their upgrade it seems. Has anyone had any success with IBM drives?
I have tried making a new image 3 times now with the same result. I have tried downloading 3 different images and I get the same result. I have burned each image twice since I read that sometimes the burn looks successful but isnt. I used adaptec to burn it which most people seem to agree with. I downloaded 25xtreme for the T60 and I am trying it as I type. If this doesnt work then I dont know what else to try until I can scrounge the cash to pick up a Maxtor.
One question I have on the restore though. It will be restoring and MB counter will be counting up and it will stop for up to a minute periodically. It always continues on and appears to succeed. Is this normal?
EDIT: OK I am convinced that I am having problems either with the IBM or with the PC that I am using to bu/restore images. I ran 25xtreme and it succeeded with no problem. I plugged into my TIVO and it never got past "Welcome. Powering Up" Unfortunately I have no other HD to try this on and no other PC to do the imaging. I will have to post back when I get the hardware to try this again.

Have you tried searching for the word IBM?
I see several threads talking about IBM Deskstar drives. Is that what you have?
