I had heard that mfs tool is actually a better program than 25xtreme...that it allows you more options......
which program are people prefering and why?

They aren't the same things, you're comparing apples and Toyota's.

from what I have read mfstools is actually better than 25xtreme.
(thatnis what I read)...but
25xtreme is an actual tivo image and correct me if I am wrong but MFS tools are utilities correct?......

The two programs you mention are for completely different applications, so one isnt "better than the other".
What you are saying is like asking "Which is better. A socket wrench or lawn mower".
What the esteemed elders are trying to tell you:
Xtreme is actually a complete software package (operating system and several utilities) for the Tivo.
MFS tools are utilities used to backup/restore images etc.
They have nothing to do with each other, so one cannot be better than the other.
Perhaps you should read more about both by browsing the extremely helpful howto section or by searching for each....

I appreciate your detailed explanation of my question.....and I appreciate pointfreak and bubblelamps.....apples and toyota's, and socket wrench or lawn mower, comparisons....LMAO :D :D
I do need to read more, just got a little excited about this whole tivo thing....it is actually really cool.....and I have read and read, but a friend had mentioned that mfs tools was a better program than xtreme.....(I did not think so but thought I would ask and get the facts before I mentioned it to him)......
