OK guys, here goes. Now that I have finally "mastered" my SA tivo, it is time for me to take the plunge and try to butcher a DirecTivo. I think I have decided to try and pick up one on ebay, and the DSR6000 seems to be the more affordable one based on the listings I have seen. My two main reasons for wanting to switch are the dual-tuner capabilities and the fact that apparently the extractions are much, much smaller in size. This way I won't have to deal with all this transcoding hell that I am getting a little tired of frankly.

So my question is this. Is there anything in particular that I need to watch out for when scanning the listings? I saw on one auction that you need a certain software version to enable dual-tuning. Is this true? And if so, the extreme upgrade would just take care of this, right? I am not worried about there being no HU card supplied. Good luck finding one that has it. :)

Is there anything else that I am missing? Just want to make sure my purchase is done with some kind of forethought.

Thanks,

P.S. I have another refurbed Phillips 212 that I have not even touched yet. I got so geeked about Tivo that I went out and purchased another one. I guess now I will be putting it up on Ebay if all goes well with the DSR6K. :)

Dual tuner capability is enabled with SW version 2.5. 2.5Xtreme loads this image and includes many other utilities as well. Do lots of reading before performing any sort of upgrade. You'll benefit from it greatly and your hobby will be much more enjoyable as a result.

I recently purchased (i.e. 9/1/02) a refurbished DSR6000 from American Satellite for $249.00, delivered. If you are a new DTV customer you can get an even lower price. Mine was actually a brand new unit with a virgin Hu card and it came with all original accessories. Refurbished units usually have a sticker on the back that says "RENEWED". My unit had no such sticker. The best part is that it also comes with a new warranty. Buying used DTivos on ebay is a crapshoot at best. I've gotten stuck with at least one lemon on ebay and I won't go that route again unless I find one that is guaranteed.
