Hey guys,

I stumbled upon an old HDR112 SA Tivo for $90 from the Wiz. They are going out of business, and I scammed the guy into selling it for cash without a contract.

I gave my Subbed SA to my girlfriend who doesn't have satellite, but does have Cable.

I'd like to add this new unit to my legit lifetime sub that is in her house for the bedroom.

Questions:

1) I lifetime subbed that SA many years ago. I remember something about that you can add a second unit legit within the same subscription, but was that only for Dtivos ? If so, I'll just call them and add it.

2) where do you reccommend I start looking to learn about hacking SA units ( I think sub circumvention is taboo at tivocommunity) I'd like to test a lifetime sub if I can on the SA, and maybe get a bash prompt.

3) Can I either clone the unit number so it plays off of my real sub account or is there a hack for it ?

Any and all suggestions are appreciated. I'd love to learn a little more about it all, so just give me a link or something to start.

Thanks

JJ

You're already in the best Tivo hacking forum anywhere on the net. I have never seen or heard of any hack to a SA Tivo that would allow you to circumvent a paid subscription to the Tivo service. That topic is pretty much taboo in any Tivo-related forum I've seen to date. Forum moderators tend to get a little strict about that sort of thing since most, if not all, of the Tivo forums are monitored by Tivo and they wouldn't take kindly to any site that condones outright theft of their service. We get away with it here because the idea behind using fixsub to fool the DTivo into thinking we have a paid sub is to eliminate the nag messages about not dialing in and also because most of us don't use most of the silly bells and whistles that the Tivo service provides. The main reason, however, is so that we don't have to connect our Xtremed DTivos to a phone line and eventually take a software upgrade that will prevent the use of all the nice little utilities that our members have worked so hard on. While I certainly have no problem paying $4.99/month for the DTivo service I have no intention of connecting my phone line in the process. I think the monthly fee for the SA Tivos is still somewhere around $10-13/month. I believe that Tivo is also eliminating the option to get a lifetime sub and all new Tivos will require a monthly fee.

It's been a while since I've owned and operated a SA Tivo but I know that there was no provision at the time for piggybacking multiple SA Tivos on a paid sub. Each SA Tivo has to have it's own individual sub unless they went and changed the rules. I would check out the Tivo website and read the stipulations in their service agreement and see what it says.

SA Tivos never required any sort of contract at the time of purchase. I bough an HDR112 several years ago from CC for $99.00 ($199 with $100 rebate) right before they discontinued that model and came out with the 212. Still, based on what they're selling for on ebay, that's not a bad deal.

There are ways of getting a bash prompt on a SA Tivo but I've never explored them. The Tivo community forum should have info on getting bash. I don't know that they do much with a SA Tivo other than adding larger drives but I've been out of that loop for quite some time, especially since I discovered DTivos.

I know of no way to add a second SA TiVo to your first TiVo's sub that TiVo will approve of.

Hacking your SA - there is a ton of info out there... get bash and go crazy...
