does anyone else besides me have any problems with their DSR6000 getting HOT?
how hot does it usually get?
(no i'm not talking about THAT kind of "hot"...:P)

my friend hacked my tivo for me and i used to have a problem with overheating...
i opened it up and noticed the fan wasn't plugged in (that was a big "oops!" on his part for forgetting to plug it back in)....
anywayZ, i plugged it back in and it STILL gets pretty hot but not as hot as before...i haven't left it on long enuff for it to overheat so i just unplug the power when i'm not using it.
it's not a big deal but it IS annoying having to wait 5 minutes for the sucker to get the signal, warm up, etc. when i plug the power back in.

anyone else have this problem?

Chronic problem with DTivos, especially when drives are upgraded/added. Try a laptop cooling plate. I don't remember what it's called, but it's a grey plate with three fans that the DTivo sits on top of.

There's a couple of links to some notebook coolers in the Tips of the Trade sticky thread. You can also do a search for notebook coolers on www.pricewatch.com. I run both my DTivos with the covers off. You might try raising the base of the DTivo by placing a 3/4-inch strip of wood along each end to allow more air to circulate through the bottom since that is where the ventilation openings are located.

I made my spacer out of 2) 1x1 and 1) 1x2 in the shape of a Capital I that way I prevent the hot air from mixing with the cooler air I also upgraded my fan to a full 12vdc thermalite 60mm my temp usally runs around 35-37C with a room temp around 70F before the fan mods I was averaging 47-50C thats with 2 Maxtor 120gb drives. I feel the increase in fan noise was worth it have been thinking of trying the fan with the voltage controled by the board would be less noise just not sure how much of a increase in temp.

It can also depend on what drive was used to do the upgrade.. the 7200rpm model run much hotter than the 5400rpm --

This has nothing to do with heat. The DSR's just take forever to boot. Have you checked system info, to see how hot it is. If it's 55C or less, I wouldn't worry to much. It's best if you can get it below 45c.

My Maxtor 120gb are both 5400rpm drive prior to doing something about the heat I had one drive fail in about 6 months of use at the average temp between 47-50C thats why it did the fan and spacer mod. Maxtor replaced the drive under warantee so it was just the inconvience having to take the unit apart reload Xtreme for single drive use then when I got my replacement drive took about 2 weeks I had to re-Xtreme again with both drives. It would figure that it was the A drive that failed. Second time I made a backup with with all my setting so I did not have to setup all my season passes again setting up aprox 60 season passes is kinda time consumming. Since I made a backup I have not needed it since thats about right be prepared and you won't need it.
