Why is everybody with Dtivo's getting new access cards? Is there something going on that I'm not aware of? Are Dtivo's only going to work with p4's now?

I believe that the 3.x software checks for a P4 card and won't work with P3s. It may be that the reason they haven't upgraded the DirecTiVo software yet is that not everyone has a P4 card.
Mine's had a P4 since I rebuilt it. The sods charged me $20 for it :( and now they are giving them away. Doesn't seem fair to me.

Hmmmm, picked up a Sony T60 and I already got my P4's for my other Philips DTivo and regular RCA 420s. Wonder if they'll let me activate the HU that was in it?? Inquiring minds want to know :)

The Series 2 DTivo's require a P4 to work.
Are we still thinking s/w upgrades are going to come through the phone line and not the data stream? Didn't Kravens upgrade or SC.tcl take care of the upgrade problem with "s/w upgrade= false" or something along those lines? I'm not inclined to go lifting pins on my prom with all the thumbs I have:)

Sure, they'll gladly let you activate your Hu card. Then in a short while they'll send you a P4 to replace it and blacklist your Hu.
Currently, the DTivos only get their software upgrades via the phone line. I'm not sure that they're set up to accept Tivo updates via the datastream. My guess is that if it were possible then Dave would have done it by now, although DTV just recently took over management of DTivo service so they may just be biding their time.

Actually, the phone call was required to trigger the download via the stream. Using PGM's sc, I get the showcases every nite, but still no 2.5.2. :D

you have to make the change in sc.tcl. it wont take the update by default, you have to change the dataGroups option

if i activate a new dtivo with a hu card , and dave sends me a new P4, will all my recievers then be upgraded to P4, or will the hu's that have been activated for a long time, stay active?????

I already had a Philips DSR6000 DTivo and several other regular IRDs and received all new P4s a couple of weeks ago. I'm sure that if you have a DTivo and other receivers you will get all new P4s. I've talked to friends who have no DTivos and they haven't received anything yet in the mail about getting new cards.

What I really want to know is what is it in 3.0 (or 3.1 I think it will be) that requires a P4. Is it just cheching the CAM ID? Is there a card authorization required for getting the guide data an or any part of tivo service? I know there are beta testers out there that aren't all that scrupulous...anyone wanna break an NDA?

If it's similiar to the check that's being done on the new HD receivers that ship with a P4 then it is just a check similiar to the check that currently prevents the H from working in the DTivo. Although, who knows till we see the new software and find out if they did any other checks or not.
New HD receivers that ship with a P4 simply go by cam id number. Much like the current check to make sure the card is above the minimum for the HU range.
Although really I think this just about pushes the border of what is allowed here and would probably be more suited to a dtv knowledge related site.

I've heard that this is all about getting rid of NDS and they want to have every older card on the system out of use by next summer. They have an clause in their contact where they can develop their own system and stop using NDS at any time.
That said, the new card does have the NDS logo on it, which surprised me.

The p4 is capable of producing the right decryption keys for HU and H video auth packets. therefore, there has to be some proprietary NDS data inside the P4 to do that kind of stuff. They may be able to do a swap to eliminate NDS from the loop, but their entire system is based on NDS technology (how much is unclear)

This discussion is too close to the edge of not acceptable here so I'm gonna go ahead and close it. Please talk about DTV hacking elsewhere.
