Does anyone exactly what the card swap procedure does on a DTivo box, and what information is stored where??
I know this is a big "gray" area... but I wanted to be able to swap back and forth between the legit P4 and the hacked HU. Is this possible??

The card swap does nothing to the DTivo box, per se. The info is stored on the card. However, when you perform the card swap, you are first prompted to reinsert your old card so that the pertinent info can be read and stored in memory in the IRD portion of your DTivo. When the new card is reinserted, the info stored in memory is transferred to the new card, making the swapout complete. And, yes ('nuff said).

Well, SONMETHING happens on the DTivo... because I went through the card swap, and now it gives a message saying... "This card is no longer valid. Please insert your new access card."
So, it seems it stored the ID number of the old card somewhere. Also, inserting a different HU card from another receiver gives the message. "You have inserted the wrong access card. Pleas insert the correct access card."
I don't want to redo the extreme install and lose all of my recording in order to make it so I can swap cards back and forth as I usedto. Can anyone give us some insight as to what happens when the card swap takes place?? Where is the CAM ID of the current card stored?

Please take this discussion private or somewhere else grooves. You're getting too close to the edge out here in the daylight.

Don't worry about that. Not a problem.

You're original post appeared that you were asking if you could use that proceedure to swap out your original subd card for your new subd card(& afterwards maybe do some stuff that we can't discuss here). Well If that's what you did, then yes, your old card won't work anymore in that receiver(it's not dead, it just won't legitimately work in that receiver). The new card should work. If not, call direct TV & have them activate it correctly. As far as a card from another receiver, goes. Subscribed cards marry the receiver they are in. You can't just *SIMPLY* pull them out of one receiver and put them in another one.
Like Bubblelamp said. If you still aren't clear on this, find another web site that openly discusses the info you need.

Do a cold boot to fix the problem with it making unkind remarks about your dubious HU cards. You may have to do some HU fixup first. You really should know better than to try a swap a hacked HU to a new P4.
Not that I know anything about such matters. I just read a lot.
