Last week my father was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I need help with recipes. Most of the recipes I have found in some books and off of the internet have been geared more toward "gourmet meals" and I need normal everyday meal recipes. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it. Go ahead and send them in pm's and I will get them. Anything will be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you FL. I REALLY appreciate this!!!!! I think This is more than enough to get us started.. We are just touch and go at this point. Since this is something we haven't dealt with before we are still in the process of finding out more information everday and getting into a regular regimen. Again, I appreciate this so much and I'm very thankful I have friends like you that can go to this kind of trouble to help me!
Thanks again,
Shelli

TO MAKE YOUR LIFE MUCH EASIER YOU MIGHT ASK THE DOCTOR TO TELL YOU INSTEAD OF IN CALORIES HOW MANY CARBS,PROTEINS,FATS,VEGGIES PER MEAL HE IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE THEN FROM THERE YOUR LIFE WILL BE SOOOOOO MUCH EASIER
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THE CARBS BECAUSE THEY ARE WHAT TURNS INTO SUGARS AND IF YOU CAN GET THEM TO TELL YOU HOW MANY PER MEAL IT IS MUCH EASIER TO PLAN
IF THEY CANT TELL YOU CALL YOUR LOCAL HOSPITAL AND ASK TO SPEAK TO A DIATICIAN
ALSO THE HOSPITALS USUALLY HAVE REGULAR DIABETIC CLASSES THAT YOU CAN ATTEND AND WHEN YOU DO THEY USUALLY HAVE A TON OF RECIPES
OH! AND SINCE THEY WILL PROBABLY CRAVE SWEETS NOW MORE THAN EVER
SOME EASY PIES TO MAKE ARE TO USE A GRAHAM CRACKER CRUST AND USE THE SUGAR FREE PUDDINGS: EVER SEEN THE PUMPKIN PIE RECIPE THEY START ADVERTISING IN THE COUPON SECTION OF THE PAPERS THAT ONE IS EASY AND TASTES GREAT JUST SUBSTITUTE SUGARFREE PUDDING AND WALAH THEY HAVE A SUGAR FREE PUMPKIN PIE!

I too am a diabetic, When I was first told, I thought I would never be able to drink another coke or eat anything sweet. Because I am allergic to nutra sweet I felt like my world had fallen out from under me. There is a sweetner on the market called Splenda, it is a all natural sugar that diabetics can have, it taste just like sugar and is used just like sugar. with out this I would have never been able to do what the doctors told me to do STAY AWAY FROM SUGAR !well with the splenda and pepsi 1 I have been able to still have my tea and coffee taste the same as before and my soda still taste good with out the after taste that nutra sweet and other artiffical sweetners give you. Hang in there and listen to fishen lady about the carbs. she has done her home work well!:D need any help I am here for you.

YOU ARE SOO RIGHT GRANNY
THE SPLENDA ALSO WORKS REALLY WELL TO COOK WITH!
THE OTHERS NUTRASWEET AND THE YUCKY PINK STUFF ARE HORRIBLE TO COOK WITH AND DO NOT WITHSTAND MUCH HEAT AT ALL
I USED THE SPLENDA WHEN I CAN AND MAKE PRESERVES AND JELLIES IT IS VERY TRUE TO TASTE AND DOESNT CHANGE WHEN IT IS COOKED AND DOESNT LEAVE AN AFTERTASTE EITHER!

glad I could help, I will help you anyway I can. I refused to take the medication when I was first told that I would have too. My husban takes 6 to 8 shoits a day and seeing what he goes through on a daily basis made me get real seriouse(ms) and get my sugar under control with diet, as a result I am still off meds and am able to live a normal life just by watching my diet and activeties. Not saying that I will not have to take them some day soon, but at the moment I have avoided the insulin by watching everything that goes in my mouth.

Right now he is on glucophage and has been told he needs to see the dietician for better diet. He is fighting it every step of the way because he feels like his life is over. I can't say that I understand because I don't, but I have told him I would try to help in any way I possibly can. I am hoping that he gets more serious about his diet and medicine for the time being his first blood sugar count 2 weeks ago was almost 600 and now its finally down to almost 150. It needs to come down more but that is a great start!

WOW! 600 DOWN TO 150 IS GREAT! He must be doing something right. Yes I too went through the " my world has ended " stage. This will pass with time just tell him to keep up the great work he is doing and tell him the last thing he wants to do is have to go on insulin. Hubby is on insulin and taking six to eight shots a day. He was my insetive to get my sugar down, because I do not want to have to live my life knowing that just to have a small snack or one bite of food to taste I would have to take a insulin shot to do so. If were you live offers a diabetic support group try and get him to go to one and go with him. I did not want to go to one, but once I did, I relized HA i AM ALOT BETTER OFF THEN MOST OF THESE PEOPLE HERE. trust me it will help him to relize he is not as bad off as a lot of diabetics and that helped me to open my eyes and try even harder. Just hang in there with him.

I looked into the support groups today and the next meeting isn't for a few weeks. I am trying to talk him into going.. He isn't fond of support groups <we had a nasty experience in one> so if he manages to get to this one with me <I am trying to bribe him with some applesauce bars> I will bake lots of diabetic goodies for him. :)

WOW IS RIGHT!!!
THAT IS SUPER!!
GO TO AVANDIA.COM AND REGISTER THERE TOO
EXERCISE IS ALSO A REALLY IMPORTANT KEY IN KEEPING THE BLOOD SUGARS DOWN TOO!!
OTHER THAN THEY THEY CAN STILL HAVE FOODS THEY ENJOY TACOS,ENCHILADAS,BURGERS ETC IT IS SIMPLY A MATTER OF COUNTING YOUR CARBS FATS ETC
THAT HAS BEEN THE HARDEST THING FOR US TO GET ACROSS TO MY DAD AND SCOTTS
THE SUPPORT GROUPS ARE WONDERFUL AND EVEN IF YOU CANT GET HIM TO GO , GO YOURSELF YOU WILL LEARN A TON OF INFORMATION HAVE SOMEONE TO TALK TO AND WHO KNOWS WHEN HE SEES YOU GOING FOR HIM HE MIGHT JUST DECIDE TO GO WITH YOU!
I HAVE NEVER FOUND OUT HOW OLD HE IS BUT IF YOU FIND A GOOD DIABETIC DOCTOR WHO IS KEEPING UP ON THINGS MORE THAN LIKELY IF HE IS OVER THE AGE OF 60 HIS BLOOD SUGARS SHOULD BE RUNNING HIGHER THAN WHAT THE ADA'S GUIDELINE SAYS LIKE FROM 120-180
BECAUSE OF THEIR AGE IT IS A BIG FACTOR: IF THEY WERE 30 YRS OLD THEY WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR HAVING HIGH BLOOD SUGARS WHEN THEY WERE IN THEIR 60'S:IN OTHER WORDS THEIR KIDNEYS,LIVER ETC IT WOULD SHOW UP IN THEM :
THE B.S. GUIDELINE IS MAINLY FOR YOUNGER PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY OF LIVING 30- 40 MORE YEARS

OH!
AND ALSO WHEN YOU GET TO GO TO SEE A DIETICIAN PLEASE HAVE THEM TELL YOU IF HE IS ON SAY A 1500 CALORIE DIET HOW MANY CARBS,FATS,MEATS ETC THAT MEANS PER MEAL THEY WILL NEED TO BREAK DOWN WHATEVER DIET HE IS ON.
IT WILL MAKE EVERYONES LIFE SO MUCH EASIER INSTEAD OF TRYING TO COUNT CALORIES!!!!
YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SIT DOWN AND MAKE HIM OUT SOME SAMPLE MENUS MUCH EASIER
YOU COUNT MILK,BREADS,CEREALS,FRUIT,JUICES ETC AS HIS CARBS
IT ALSO MAKES IT EASIER TO UNDERSTAND FOR THEM AND YOU WHAT EXACTLY THEY ARE EATING!
LMK IF I CAN HELP
I AM THE FAMILY DIETICIAN HEHE
