I had similar symptoms...turns out it was the drive. Just my 2 cents.

If the drive is truely bad I wouldn't use it at all. I used the diagnostic tool from the drive manufacturer to verify its functionality.

i've had similar issues, and in both cases it was a bad drive.

in one case the tivo worked fine until it started to try recording, or until i attempted to access a stored recording.. at this point a reboot occurred.

in my second failure, the tivo would boot from the PROM, then as it began to boot from the hard drive, it would die and reboot.

one drive lasted 3 months, the second for about 35 days...

after replacing and reXtreming tivo a 3rd time, i've added cooling fans to the case, and this has kept my tivo several degrees cooler. im hoping the lower temps will increase my hard disk life.

hope this helps,

hmmm i lost two maxtors, but the third is doing good so far (knock on wood).

as for the fans, one is between the ir/serial ports and the other input/output jacks..

the other fan is mounted just above the cardslot.

i used a hard disk cooler fan setup, took the fans off the cheap aluminum bracket, and then mounted the fans on the back of the case directly.

noise isnt bad either... its not much louder now than was before i did the mod.

BTW I also cut a slot for an RJ45 coupler so that I could plug a patch cable into the tivo and not have cable haging out of tivo. i put this just above the RJ11 jack thats already on tivo.

2 Western Dig drives went out on me...symptoms were exactly as stated by OBD. I hear (new) Segate drives are reliable. I'm back to using the OEM Quantum.
