Unlocking new Maxtor drives

I have been looking for information concerning the "unlocking" of the Maxtor drives. As Wooly said "Unlocking a Maxtor drive? It's not unlocking, per se, but go to Maxtor's site and download the sound management software (along with Write verification). Turn Sound Management to "Quiet", and turn Verify Writes to "off". It's 2 different utils." I feel like a real dumb A__ but I can't find these utilities. Would anyone have an idea as how to get them. Also, is it necessary to perform the above on a new Maxtor drive?
