Has anyone had success with using the Tivo as a MP3 store for an Audiotron? It seems like a natural solution because the Tivo is on all the time whereas my computer might not be.
I have seen several posts that mention Samba but haven't seen anything definitive...

AFAIK, all those posts mentioning samba were talking about the samba client, not the samba server. The client doesn't even work all that well, I would imagine that the server would be an even bigger undertaking to get working on the Tivo. If it were trivial (or even moderately hard) to get the Samba server working on the Tivo, one would think that Tridge would have already done it since he wrote a large portion of Samba and is also the "patron of Nets, Streams, and All Reverse Engineers" on the Tivo according to rc.arch. If anyone could make the Samba server run on the Tivo he could and AFAIK he hasn't. Also, the Tivo does not have a great amount of space in the ext2 partitions, you would either need to expand the current ext2 partitions or add new ones in order to have enough storage to make it worthwhile.

You should take a look at the Toshiba Magnia SG10 server product before you spend the big bucks on the Linksys. It has a 20Gig drive and is far more capable. You can get one for about $200 brand new.

I found one for $300 and ordered it...could you give a link for a cheaper one? Anyway...what's the deal with these? I've seen them for as much as $1400; are they closeouts?

with Celeron 500 MHz and Toshiba was dumping the older (year 2000, AMD K6-II 350 MHz) at notebooktrade.com, as well as Tigger Duh-wrecked. The largest problem is that the SG10's RedHat kernel is version 2.2.x, and doesn't support IDE drives larger than about 30 Gb. Fortunately, the OEM 20 Gb drive works just fine, unless you've got a heckuva lot of MP3 files (who, me?)
Several users have installed newer kernels to support larger drives, but the Toshiba hardware management software for the SG10 BIOS doesn't function on 2.4.x kernels. We're pestering Toshiba for help with it, though. :D
Good luck with your purchase . . .

How secure would you rate the firewall on these units?

No one seems to like the built-in Toshiba front-end (myself included--I had reliability problems with it) but you can install e-smith SME server or ClarkConnect or NetMax or just plain old Linux (whatever flavor you choose). I put SME Server on mine (free) but if you're handy w/Linux you can do whatever you want.
eBay has featured a bunch of SG10's lately starting at $149; also SG20s starting at $100 more--dunno what they've sold for. They are brand-new so must be considered closeouts I think--yeah you saw correctly these went for $1500 (though no doubt NOT MANY!).
But it's very nifty hardware indeed. Regardless of what you end-up doing with yours I expect you will agree it's 'way cool'.

laserfan,
Were you able to get all the box's features to work with the e-smith product installed (ie print server, modem, front panel lcd, etc). Are you able to add larger hard drives? If so, would it be possible to get an image from you?

where all things sgx0 are discussed. There are images of various types on an ftp site kindly made available by one of the members. The e-smith image(s) are the most full-featured, at least everything you mentioned; haven't quite got the lcd/fan mgmt to work yet on ClarkConnect. I have a 30g 2ndDisk which was trivially easy to install (plug & go). You will want to spend an hour or two wading thru all the 700+ messages there (from only the last month or so since inception). There are also links to other info and photos and...
See you there!
