I am trying to add nosdd to my tivo. I have already installed xtreme and xplusz but not kraven's update. My problem is that there seems to be several ways to add nosdd and I can't figure out what to do. I am looking for the easiest way possible to block the updates. Since I don't have kraven's update, I have a /var/hack instead of /hack. Can I just change all the instructions in the readme file for nosdd from /hack to /var/hack or will I still need to edit things once it is installed?
Once it is installed, I am not sure how to run it. Does it just run automatically or do I need to tell it when to run, and if so, how? I have cron via xplusz and from what I have read, this seems to be the best way to run it. I have searched for instructions on how to run via cron but all I can find is people saying just to run it via cron, not HOW TO run it via cron. Can anyone provide some help?

You'll still need to edit things. Check my posts in the Nossd thread. I run it from /var/hack. I edited the paths in one of AlphaWolfs files. I use a file called textpad & do it on a normal computer. You can also edit it with Joe. The other way is to change something in your rc.sysinit, but I don't remember what it is(once again see my posts in nossd)?

Thanks for your response. I found your posts. I think I am ready to go, but just to make sure, all I need to do is modify the instructions in the readme file to /var/hack for installation, then once its installed, use joe to edit the four lines in runnosdd to /var/hack, and that's it?
If that's it, can I just edit the 4 lines using textpad BEFORE I install them?

Yes, you can change the lines in textpad before ever uploading it to your tivo. HOWEVER, I took another look at the nossd thread. The only reason that I took that route, is because I had alreay edited my rc.sysinit file, and prefer to edit the nossd files, instead of re-editing rc.sysinit, because it's safer, & I messed up my tivo once screwing with rc.sysinit. If you haven't started yet, your best be is to:
'mkdir /hack'
Then just follow Alphawolfs directions exactly as written. If you use my approach, from the start, you would need to edit both the runnosdd file and your rc.sysinit & modify everything accordingly. The only reason you might want to do it my way, is if you already added the lines at the botom of your rc.sysinit file with /var/hack instead of /hack.

BTW feel free to make changes and mofications to the script and publish them here as you guys please if you find anything that works better. My main intent with that script was just to introduce the concept, I haven't had time to play with it recently as it already seems to work well on my tivos, and I probably wont be making anymore changes now that I am back in school.

A few more question before I start:
1. When I do 'mkdir /hack', that just creates a directory for /hack correct? Would I then need to transfer everything from /var/hack to /hack?
2. If so, how do I go about doing this?
3. Once I am done making and transfering everything to /hack, do I then need to delete /var/hack?
4. Is there anything else that needs to be done? For example, are there any other commands that effect how the tivo operates that I need to change so that they will now refer to the new /hack?
I am trying to be very carefull when doing this. I am in grad school nearing exams and don't have time to fix things if I screw something up. At the same time, I am afraid that if I don't do this now, I will soon get stuck with a new software version that causes me problems. On the surface, from what I have read, it seems like it would be easier to just edit the files in nosdd and modify the directions accordingly. Am I wrong in this assumption? Are there any disadvantages to doing it that way? Thank you very much for your patience and help.

You can have two hack directories. If you already have a /var/hack, there is no problem with leaving it alone and making a /hack. If you haven't moved any files yet, then just make a /var/hack directory & follow the directions. If you put the nossd files in /var/hack, then just move those (2) files to /hack & follow the directions. If the files finally reside in /hack, make sure that your rc.sysinit has the /hack path(which is what the directions tell you to do anyway).
