I have been working on TCS the last few days, trying to get it to work with my 2.5.1 setup.
This morning I came to check my logs and I saw this in /var/log/

crw-rw-rw- 1 0 0 1, 3 Dec 2 06:39 messages
crw-rw-rw- 1 0 0 1, 3 Dec 2 06:39 secure
crw-rw-rw- 1 0 0 1, 3 Dec 2 06:39 svclog
crw-rw-rw- 1 0 0 1, 3 Dec 2 06:39 tclient
crw-rw-rw- 1 0 0 1, 3 Dec 2 06:39 tcs
crw-rw-rw- 1 0 0 1, 3 Dec 2 06:39 tcsd
crw-rw-rw- 1 0 0 1, 3 Dec 2 06:39 tivoLog.prv
crw-rw-rw- 1 0 0 1, 3 Dec 2 06:39 tivoLog.prv.N

When I try to NANO one of the logs it says 'file is a device file'.
Anyone ever see this? B

You have "Nulled" your logs. Did you do the LogsNull hack, or are you running SuperZaps XPlus ?

All log files are converted. They are unreadable in this state. You'll need to remove the Null logging line (from wherever it is on your system) and delete all those files, and start again.

make sure you delete them again and re-enable LogsNull before connecting back to DTV or Tivo in any way.

The only thing I have been trying to install was the Tivo Control Station.
I never got it to work though. It kept dying with this error:

Loading WeatherMaps
Loading Sendkey Client
Loading Event Server
Creating event mempool
Tmk Assertion Failure:
CreateSharedMemoryFile, line 211 ()
Tmk Fatal Error: Thread tivosh <329> died due to signal -2

Still haven't figured out why the above is happening. I do not know how the logs/device issue is tied to TCS as well. B

<sigh>

Are you running LogsNull, or SuperZap's xPlusZ ?

Didn't you ask about the Device File error in THIS thread?

The log issue is unrelated to TCS. I was merely explaining why you couldn't use the logs to help diagnose the TCS problem.

Sorry, my bad.

This is a virgin 25Xtreme install. The only thing I am trying to install is the TCS hack. There have been no other hacks installed prior to this log issue happening.

Although, I did install TivoWeb Beta4, I believe it was after the log issue cropped up.

If the log issue is unrelated to TCS, then I am really stumped as to why it happened. B

I don't think so. I remember Superzap coming up with the idea of creating the null files, and that was only after a lot of folks started seeing their hack dirs disappear.
