View Full Version : switching hd
hey guys my second tivo went bad so i am going to put the hd in my home pc, so i deleted the partitions and created a new one and formatted it but i cant load windows xp on it but i can load windows 98 but wont even let me do an upgrade, i have both home edition and xp pro niether programs will load onto hd but 98 will. i know 98 is linux compatiable and xp isnt so is there a special way to remove all the linux files off of hd or is that the problem? im stumped here!!!! i know the hd has to be good or it wouldnt format nor run windows 98.

This is way off topic for this forum..However, I'm betting that XP has to load from Windows and not from DOS. I had the same problem when I installed Windows 2000 and XP. You'll need to install Win 98 on your PC first and then install Win XP from Windows. I created an additional partition where I copied Win98 in the event that I ever had to reinstall either Win2K or WinXP. I used Partition Magic to create the additional partitions. First I created a small primary partition and installed Win98 on it. I then copied the partition containing Win98 to the empty space on the drive and then hid the original primary partition. I made the copied partition active and booted into Win98 from it and insrtalled Win2K/XP over the existing Win98 installation. If I ever need to reinstall either OS, I simply delete the new partition, make the hidden partition active and copy it again and repeat the process. It's also not a bad idea to use Norton Ghost or DriveImage to make a backup image of the OS partition once it's installed and working. It's a lot easier to restore it without having to reload all the programs from scratch.

Configure your hardware to boot off the CD, insert the XP CD, presto, installation with no previous OS. (This assumes you don't have an upgrade CD.)
PS, you shouldn't create any partitions on the disk, let the OS installer do that for you.
PPS, you can get the boot floppy images from MS here (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q310994) if you can't boot from CD.
i have tried not creating a partition and letting xp pro format and load still goes all the way through and says error copying files to hd i thought it might be the disk so i got another from a friend and it still does the same and after installing 98 i tried to do an upgrade with xp home still nothing get herd error system32 some kind of .dll file thanks for the help but any other ideas?

Sounds like a badly burned CD, or possibly an older CD-ROM drive that can't quite read a CD-R. I've seen that happen before, had to switch to a new drive to read it properly.
why would 98se work and i use this cd all the time i loaded my laptop, my home pc, and four other pc's why would it stop working now? niether cd of xp works both wouldnt just go bad at the same time. these are not copys they are legit. any other ideas?

I swapped my tivo's 30g and 15g drive setup for a 60g and 30g. Took the 15 leftover from the tivo and installed XP without any problems. You may want to try disabling udma on that controller, and possibly using the floppy setup. You can create the disks off the cd, I think it's in the tools directory, or download as stated above. If that doesn't work, try a different cd rom drive. All cd's are not created equal and some drives are finicky. Good luck.
