I haven't seen this answered anywhere...
I just recently extremed a Sony T-60.
I have it hooked up to my Technics home theater system via the optical out.
Programs that are supposed to be Dolby Digital (namely the PPV's) are only being recognized as pro logic surround.
last week, I noticed that the first program to register as true 5.1 dolby digital was the Sopranos on HBO, but when I went to watch this weeks episode, it was back to the same pro logic setting.
I have the audio option to output and record in DD selected in the menu.
What if anything am I doing wrong, my Technics automatically selects the right format based on the stream its receiving so it shouldn't have anything to do on that end.
Am I correct in assuming that all the new PPV movies are presented in 5.1?

No. Not all PPV movies are presented in 5.1.

For whatever reason, Soprano's this week was not in Dolby Digital for me either. All past episodes have been. It probably has nothing to do with your setup. Most new ppv movies used to have one out of the several showings in DD. Now it seems only a few of the new ones are in DD. Also, many of the movies in the 500's that are listed as being DD in the program guide are not acctually broadcast in DD. I would say if you are recieving some shows in DD then you probably have everything set up correctly. For DD, take the guide info with a grain of salt.

P.S. You can set your program guide to only show DD listings, just remember it's not always accurate.

There are pitifully few programs being broadcast by DTV that are in Dolby Digital. They only have maybe 1 or 2 PPV movies out of the current batch being shown that are actually in Dolby Digital. HBO and Showtime are also supposed to be in AC-3 but they seem to have cut back in this area as well lately.

wasn't it just a year ago that they were hyping DD 5.1 so loudly on their special channels, with all those fancy videos, obviously broadcast with very little compression? wonder how many people bought in, then they decided to scale back, thinking "nahhh, they'll NEVER notice the difference"

it's just crass commercialism, so play their own game against them. call DTV and complain that you're not receiving what they're advertising, and what you're paying for. maybe even that digital cable is starting to look like a better, more reliable option for your quality home theater experience (can't hurt, can it?)

then see what they might offer you to stick with them...
