Newbie with Question: DTV and UTV

I am wanting to get UltimateTV or Tivo with DirectTV and was wondering about how this works. I know all about the cards with DTV and wanted to know if that is all I would need with UltimateTV or Tivo with the all-in-one units? Will it record and all with DTV, or will I have to do something else to get it to work for me?
In short: Can I get this to work with NO phone lines?

this topic is clearly relating to dtv hacking, not taking apart the UTV system to see how it works or improving functionality.

This board isnt for discussion of DTV hacking. there is plenty of information on that aspect other places.
