I got the 3.1 download.Info + 1 question

Just for everyone's info...

MY tivo is Extremed with NO KRAVEN. It has a turbonet. Nothing really special about my setup.

Last night.. 2:00am.. my reciever swtiched to channel 100. It preceded to download the 3.1 upgrade.. it assumed it would take about 30 minutes.. it took about 20. This is completely from the satallite dish. i have NO PHONE LINE INSTALLED.

After the install the machine did not auto reboot. As of this writing i havent bounced the tivo, cause im a bit nervous that when i do, im gonna lose everything i have on there.. but for now, EVERYTHING is working. I can still telnet and ftp to the tivo.

So, My question is.. while i have telnet and ftp still working, is there anything i should/could do right now, before i reset the tivo, to minimize the effect of the 3.1 download? or has anyone confirmed that we can just let the upgrade go thru?

I'm assuming your DTiVo is pending restart? If you don't want the 3.1 upgrade put
upgradesoftware=false
into /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit right above this code:
if [ "$upgradesoftware" = false ]; then

tivosh /etc/rc.d/finishInstall.tcl
export -n EMERGENCY_REINSTALL
fiThis will postpone the upgrade indefinitely, however the DTiVo might reboot every night and you might want to put
set install 0
into /tvlib/tcl/tv/TClient-lib.itcl right above this line:
if { ! $install }
this should prevent the nightly reboot.
You could also just let the upgrade happen, but you'll need to reapply all your hacks after clearing the initrd. You better have a P4 card if you do that.

i have the 3.1 running on my sony t-60
and since there are 2 boot parts for tivo
i was able to copy all the stuff i needed from
the older part that had 2.5.2 to the one
that has 3.1 then i did the initrd thingy
that i had on my turbonet install cd.

the biggest problem i had was getting the right mount
because i could not remember this
mkdir /mnt/tivo
mkdir /mnt/tivonew
mount /dev/hdc3 /mnt/tivo
mount /dev/hdc7 /mnt/tivonew

then i added a couple of lines to
the systinit on the new one to start ftpd
and telnet .

after that was working i was able to get
everything to work.

it was so much easier than i thought it was
going to be

Thanks super.. i made the changes.. bit the bullet and bounced the tivo. Its all still working great.

Just curious.. what exactly is the 3.1 update supposed to do for us? Other than just lock us into the P4 cards?

I have a P4, but i use an HU. I m assuming that why i got the update. From what I've been reading you're not supposed to get 3.1 unless you've activated a P4.
Eitherway, making those changes stopped the 3.1 from installing.. IT DID DOWNLOAD, but it didnt install.
I still havent found out what exactly 3.1 does tho.

I had my 6000 with extreme but not the kavens update.
I got the 3.1 update,it went fine,almost the system runs fine,but now all the shows I recorded under extreme I can't play and had to delete them. I had extremed my system just a week before and mostly I had the movies I recorded over thanksgivings free hbo. I just got my turbo net card a few days ago and have not installed it yet

OK, first off, ever since I read that 3.1 does some nasty stuff to your tivo, I have unplugged the ethernet cable from my turbonet. For a very specific reason I do NOT want this update. I just want to make sure that what I am about to do tonight is right. All I have to do is insert those two lines that you mentioned Super? I don't have to comment anything out? I thought I read in a post a while back that you have to comment some stuff out. Is this no longer the case? Also do I even have to worry about this since my turbonet is recognized as net0 and not eth0 per kraven's upgrade.

Sorry if it is just me that is confused. Just want to make sure I am taking the proper steps. I can't believe how addicted I am to this little box. Just ask my girlfriend. She's wondering who I am going to propose to first, her or a little black box. :)

That's all you should have to do. The 3.1 upgrade could come in even if you don't have a land based link to the tivo service. Emphasis on could.

I'm still a bit confused. I am using Extreme with the SubT* feature and no phone line plugged in since it made my hard disk upgrade so easy and I fear that software updates will mess up my recordings. I recently got the P4 card and everything is still working fine. I have no intention of using anything but the P4 card in my machine and don't need network access. Should I fear 3.1 since I'd be real upset if I loose my 200hrs of recordings (I'm soooo behind in my TV viewing...)? I know that they are not downloading 3.1 via the stream at this point but I figure that there is a pretty good chance they will down the road. I can try to stop it but is there any reason for me to? Again, I just don't want to loose my recordings.

i did not loose my recordings when it loaded the 3.1
upgrade. in fact i have things going back to sept 15
in there right now.

Since that information is a violation of this board's guidelines, I recommend looking on some other sites for that information.

The short answer is YES. There are ways to use an HU card with 3.1.

Search at PD for answers.

have you checked your svclog to see if the Tivo really downloaded the update from the sat? Maybe you got it through your Turbonet.

Anyone know if the update is being sent via sat? I just checked my svclog and haven't seen the update being offered this way.

i know it came thru the satellite, cause
1) even tho my tivo is plugged into the router, my router wasnt connected to my cable modem
2) i dont even have a dial code programmed. intead of a phone # or 411 its just 000
so i KNOW it came thru the stream.

I don't believe it came thru the satelitte, cause
1)The 411 dial code thing is a 3.x feature, so that wouldn't make any difference if you were running 2.5.x.
2)Maybe someone plugged in your router while you weren't looking, or you downloaded it before you unplugged the thing.
3)As has been mentioned a few times already, it just hasn't been part of the service downloads as of yet.

Hi all, I have a little problem with my guide data for my cities locals. One day i was missing them and moved over 136mvchannels.tcl on a 2.5 version tivo. I executed the commands to chmod it and execute and loaded it using the custom channels.dat i created. My locals came in fine as well as the guide data. For the past three days however the guide data has left and "To Be Announced" is in place of it. I read later that 136 mvchannels will only work on 2.5.2 and may be the problem of this. I also installed xplusz and have messed around with that also but to no avail i still do not have any guide data for my locals. The locals come in just fine I just cant see whats playin in the guide. I have read something about deleting the current
mvchannels, main.dat, channels.dat and moving over the three files from mvchannels 135 and then doing a mvchannels reset and redoing the loading part. Does anyone think this will work? Any suggestions?

SIDE NOTE: I am able to get multiple locals on my tivo using xplusz and those locals get guide data just fine. Thank you

ok, im a bit of a newb, so I am extremely confused as to what I have to do at this point. my dtivo downloaded the 3.1 update and rebooted while i was away for the weekend, and now nothing works... what do I have to edit, where can I find it and how do I get everything back on the up and up?

Any help, questions, comments, or suggestions would be appreciated

After spending about 6 hours on this today, I am no further along than I was this morning when I woke up and realized CRAP I have 30 hrs of programming that I havent watched and I cant even watch it now... ARGH... I was going to follow Cobelli's Monte guide, but I cant find the 3.1.u5 img.. Argh!
