New purchase question

I am finally going to get a Directivo for Xmas. :)

I am VERY confused about which model would be best, especially considering the new series 2 units.

In my reading, it seems that older series 1 units are more upgradeable.

I would like very much to be able to increase my recording time and do some emu testing.

Someone please give me some advise about what units are most flexible. I would hate to purchase a unit and find out that my testing flexibility is compormised.

I own both a Philips DSR6000 and a Sony Sat-T60 (both series 1 DirecTivos.)

First off, if you are into upgrading or just playing around with your electronic toys, a Series 1 is going to suit much better as the Series 2 's are not as "hackable" at this point. The series 1 tivo already have many utilities out and will definately give you something to do for awhile. On the other hand the series 2's are supposed to be a bit faster, and if you can wait a bit, I'm sure they'll be opened up for more expirimentation, as more people get them.

Of the 2 I own I would have to say I like the Philips better. The menus seem to move faster and the remote is the classic peanut style and seems to work better than the Sony.

As far as your emu concerns go, they cannot be discussed here.
