View Full Version : noscramble for v 2.5
It's a bit confusing reading all of these posts regarding noscramble that it's hard to tell what works with 2.5 software.
I'm running 2.5 on a Sony SAT-T60 with TurboNet. I've placed noscramble.o in /var/hack.
Now what? Isn't there something I need to put in rc.sysinit.author?

Type chmod 644 /var/hack/noscramble.o
then add this line to the end of your rc.sysinit file and reboot:
insmod -f /var/hack/noscramble.o
I was hoping that my problem was going to stump you guys for a day or so ... I was wrong. I wanted to go to bed early tonight and now ... thanks to BubbleLamp ... I have to stay up and install noscramble!
;) ;)
I rebooted and issued the "cat /proc/modules" and noscramble wasn't listed. Is there anything else I need to do?
By the way, I used FTP to send out the new rc.sysinit.author file to /etc/rc.d. Is that sufficient?

The file you are supposed to be editing is rc.sysinit, in the /etc/rc.d directory. If you are editing on the PC, then make sure you use an editor that saves the file in UNIX format, or run DOS2UNIX on it. After you send it to the Tivo, you need to chmod 755 the file BEFORE you reboot.
Where did you come up with the name rc.sysinit.author?
rc.sysinit.author is originally on the Dtivo, at least it is after an Xtreme install (I assume it was just left there from the standard software.) It is supposed to be run at the end of the rc.sysinit, but I have had problems getting things to run out of it.
Here's what the author line looks like and how I got noscramble working before Kraven's update:
==================================
[ ! -f /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit.author ] || /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit.author
sleep 10
/sbin/insmod /var/hack/noscramble.o
echo "rc.sysinit is complete"
==================================
My bash is rusty and I'm too lazy to double check, but it looks like it checks to see if rc.sysinit.author exists, and if it does, it executes it.
That did it! The <CR>s and <LF>s were all goofed up. I used the JOE editor this time.
Oh, about rc.sysinit.author ... from "First Time Hack, Section 5" (http://www.stevejenkins.com/tivo/newbie.html) ...
When your TiVo boots, it checks for the existence of an rc.sysinit.author file in the same directory as your rc.sysinit file (which, if your don’t remember, is /etc/rc.d). If the rc.sysinit.author file exists in that directory, your TiVo runs that file immediately after it finishes running rc.sysinit. Creating an rc.sysinit.author file to load programs is much safer than further editing your rc.sysinit, since a small mistake in rc.sysinit can prevent your TiVo from booting. Also, just like rc.sysinit, your rc.sysinit.author should be created on both partitions 4 and 7.
Quoted from above link:
"When your TiVo boots, it checks for the existence of an rc.sysinit.author file in the same directory as your rc.sysinit file (which, if your don’t remember, is /etc/rc.d). If the rc.sysinit.author file exists in that directory, your TiVo runs that file immediately after it finishes running rc.sysinit"
Guess my bash isn't as rusty as I thought. :D
I now have two FULL sized audio and video MPEGs. Looks great. thanks for the help BL!
I suppose I'll find out as I progress through all of this but why is there squiggly interferance at the top of the video? It's barely noticable but is that what everyone's talking about regarding the header?

Sorry, I got rid of the .author file a long time ago.:confused:
While your bash is not as rusty as you thought ... mine is. As a matter of fact, I never saw a bash prompt or working in UNIX/LINUX until yesterday. I'm an old VMS guy.
Anyway, I see that you're using an echo command. Does this display on your TV when your TiVo reboots?
Now that I have noscramble on, TyTool is very happy with the recordings I've made SINCE I turned on noscramble. Super, I'm off and running.
Oddly enough, I'm still able to watch programs recorded BEFORE I turned on noscramble! I thought we weren't going to be able to do that?

That is odd. I ussually get an error on the tivo that says something like the recording is corrupt if I try to play a scrambled recording with noscramble loaded. Be sure to check that noscramble is indeed loaded with: cat /proc/modules (though if you are extracting it must be.)
In answer to your first question, the echo isn't mine, It, like the rc.sysinit.author line was just in there from either Xtreme or the original OS. It does not get displayed to the terminal (std out,) but rather is directed to the log files. I believe this because of how rc.sysinit is called on boot (standard out is most likely redirected to a file.) Normally an echo would result in text to the active terminal.
I'm also able to use TyTool with all of my old recordings!!!!!
I thought we weren't going to be able to do this!!!
WOW! I have alot of 9/11 live coverage that I wanted to keep and I didn't want to have to buy/borrow a VCR just for all that. Now I can dump it all to DVD!
WOOOOOOOO!

My bet is you're running Kraven's update, since it runs noscramble automatically. Previously scrambled files DO NOT play back unless noscramble is unloaded.

Wow... so was his stuff already unscrambled and he just didn't know it or did he find some kind of magic? I have like 28 episodes of South Park I'd like to keep if posible... heheheh
jaja, were you unable to extract/mux prior to using the noscramble mod?

One last possibility, if he did the kernel mod to stop encrypting, that would be permanent, and noscramble wouldn't be needed.

Can someone post a walk through for installing this step by step? I'm new to this whole linux and bash thing. Where do I get the files, etc. I have everything else working, turbonet etc.
Thanks,
Raul
