View Full Version : Problem expanding DSR6000

Quick history: I used Extreme 2.5 about a year ago to upgrade my DSR6000 to 2.5.1? and get dual tuner support. In July I used MFS Tools 2 to copy the original 30 and 15 Gig drives to (respectively) 80 and 40 Gig drives. After completing this upgrade I had 107 hours - about what I had expected.

Today I tried to replace the 40 Gig b drive with a 120 Gig drive. Unfortunately, the increased capacity is not recognised.

Set up: The drives were connected as:
Primary master = 80 Gig
Primary slave = 40 Gig
Secondary master=120 Gig

Per Hinsdale's directions, the drives were copied with:
dd if=/dev/hdb of=/dev/hdc bs=1024k
then expanded with:
mfsadd -x /dev/hda /dev/hdc

mfsadd reported the expected recording capacity for a stand alone TiVo was 127 hours. I would have expected something closer to 180 hours. When I placed the drives back into the DirecTiVo and checked system status, it reported the total capacity was 107 hours - NOT what I expected.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what went wrong, and how I can correct it?

Thaks,

PlainBill

I looked over Hinsdale's How Tos to see if I could see something you might have missed but I came up blank. Your setup and commands are all correct for the upgrade you are attempting. The only thing I can think of is that you may have used an earlier version of MFS Tools for your previous upgrade. If that's the case, then you may have to make a backup of the combined 80GB and 40GB drives and then restore the backup to the 80GB and 120GB drives. This would unfortunately result in the loss of any recordings but it should give you the increased capacity with the new drive. You could try copying the 80+40GB drives to the 120GB drive and use it as the new A drive and then add the 80GB drive as the B drive (Hinsdale's upgrade configuration #6). This would preserve your recordings and may work to increase your capacity as well. You will need to make sure that you increase the size of the swap file to accommodate the increased capacity (>140GB).

Thanks for the confirmation. I have verified that linux appears to recognise the full capacity of both drives. I used the same version of MFS Tools each time (same copy, actually). Is there any chance that the problem is that the capacity can be expanded only once?

I had considered combining the drives, but had wished to avoid the extra work. Well, time to bite the bullet. Darn, I just checked Hinsdale, and realised I can't do this on a DirecTiVo.

Is there any way to see exactly what the DirecTiVo 'thinks' the drives are? How does MFS Tools expand the capacity?

Thanks,
