I'm about a shade greener than the message icon, and am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I want to burn some shows from my Series 2 onto my PC's DVD recorder. My computer's OS is Windows XP, and I know a little less than nothing about programming. If someone could point me in the right direction, I'd be much obliged (bearing in mind I'm mostly lingo-norant). Thanks.

are you running an SA series 2 or a dtivo series 2? either way, you need to hack it. im not sure if the SA units have encryption on the S2's, but i can pretty much guarantee that the dtivo S2's are scrambled. as such, you need to hack the unit, then apply a noscramble patch to the kernel (which hasnt been developed yet for the s2). basically, you are SOL for a little while, until more of us get s2s to hack.

Then I guess I'll have to friggin wait. Grrr. Thanks for the quick response MB. Out of curiosity, is it possible for me to remove the hardrive altogether and place it into my PC for extraction? And I do have a dtivo.

not currently. regardless, the shows are scrambled, so even if you removed the hard drive, you still would have no way to unscramble the shows, so it would be pointless.

D'OH!!! Ah, well. Let me know when things change. Thanks, MB.

Morning Mr Black!
Glad to see you post all over! :)

As to our Recording Issue i also have a Dtivo.
and there is a great tool call a Dazzle that will Transfer What you record on your TIVO to your PC for DVD or VCD burning.

This is the only way i found to do this, its an RCA to Firewire Output on the fly hardware conversion. Works Great Enjoy!
:D

To piggyback, I'd like to do the same thing only I have a SA Series 2. Any luck or SOL as well?

THanks

DOT: Does this "Dazzle" program work with a SA Series 2 TiVo?

dazzle is a line of products designed to take video from a variety of sources and get it into the computer. among them are av bridges, which convert analog video into firewire data for the computer. they will work with any input source with rca style or svideo inputs.

so that would work probably assuming that my SA doesn't not scramble the video?

it doesnt matter what the SA does with the video internally, because the dazzle deals with the analog signal that is output

all your doing with that is recording your analog output to your computer. you're not getting a digital copy. it's just like you pluged your VCR into your TIVO or something.

He actually gets a digital copy on the PC. I'm fairly certain the Dazzle devices takes an analog source and converts it into mpeg on the fly. So the process is essentially: digital -> analog -> digital again.

The Dazzle does NOT do analog to MPEG2 compression on the fly. It is simply a break-out box that converts analog video into digital video. I am video editor and I've used a similar application to digitize TiVo videoonto my computer.

The problem is this process is pointless if your final output will be on DVD. The TiVo contains a hardware encoder that converts your cable broadcast into MPEG2. This means, you should be able to transfer the MPEG2 to your hard drive and burn a DVD without encoding/re-encoding.

Using a Dazzel or any other converter requires the user to digitize the video. Then convert it to an MPEG2 and then mux/burn.

Has anyone figured out a way to extract the MPEG directly, yet?

yes, you can export the raw video directly from the tivo. in fact, there is an entire forum devoted to it on this site: http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=39

there is a noscramble patch for the s2 dtivos, and you dont need a patch for the s2 SA units (because the SA units don't scramble their video).

current tools may not support s2 extracted video, but that support will be there very soon

What makes you think the sa s2 units don't encrypt their data? I have a sa s2 and tried using tytools and tserver_mfs (compiled for mips) but only get 0k files which from what I've read means the files are encrypted.

according to reports from others, the sa s2 is unencrypted. if you are getting 0k files, then try the version of tserver that jdiner just posted. or, try mfs_extract and such.

i dont have an sa s2 to check with, but the people who know said that the video was unscrambled. maybe they changed that in 3.2 or something, but i doubt it.

That was it. Jdiner's latest upload seems to be working. :) I will work on the dl'd stream and post my results.

Ok, I successfully got the ty file off of my sa series 2. Tytools 5r2 could not demux the stream, it gave the error "we did not find an embedded audio header" over and over again.

Instead, I used tydemux which demuxed the file quickly and easily. However, I'm not sure about the sync offset. Here's part of the results of tydemux:

------
Starting demux process
......... 100......... 200..Temporal Reference Error - Repairing
The Temporal Reference error is a underflow in frames
Underflow in frames repaired
....... 300..
Demux process finished

A/V Sync Offset: 011ms (i.e. audio plays 011ms early use -O -011 in mplex)
Return value 11

------

When I run mplex -O -011 -o p.mpg p.m2v p.m2a The audio is still out of sync by about -1000 ms when played in WinDVD.

Anyone know why this might be happening?

MrBlack51... Can you please give a pointer to the noscramble for s2? All I can find are notes that this noscramble doesn't work for s2...

Thanks,

Check out this, I haven't tried it but the directions are very easy, even if you're not a linux nerd. http://tipster.stormrad.com/tivo/extraction.html

Search for kmem, you will find posts detailing a command to add to your hackinit to turn off scrambling.

Thanks!

Specifically, here is the link for the kmem patches (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21142).
