View Full Version : Sony T-60... Turbonet ok, but No Telnet?

Well it seems that my previously hacked and working Tivo with TurboNet, has
decided to give up allowing a Telnet session. Hence I can't get TyTool
working as I can't start the streaming on the Tivo.

Here's what happened.... We moved from California to Arizona, and moved our
Sony SAT-T60 DirecTivo (with 2.5.2 software running). Had the satellite guy
come out and install a new dish and set it all up. For some reason, the
refresh from the setup wiped out my network card. So I had to reinstall the
drivers.

When I went to find my old drivers, they were long gone. So I went to 9th
Tee to download the drivers again, and got a new installation CD with
upgraded drivers to handle the 3.x software updates.

I installed those. And guess what! I can Ping the Tivo at last.

But attempting to open a telnet session, doesn't work. It would seem that
these drivers are working fine for the card, but I can't seem to find out
why I can no longer get Telnet, FTP or TivoWeb working.

I did some research on AVForum and noted that some people have complained
that upon installing a TurboNet card in a 3.x Tivo system, particularly on a
DirecTivo system like mine, that they can't get Telnet either, but there is
a script that enables it for them. But I'm still running 2.5.2 and don't
want to upgrade it.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas as to what I can do to get Telnet
working again, so I can return to the world of extraction?

Thanks

I have a T60 that I upgraded the A drive - it had 2.5.2, and got 3.1 last night - this is a legit subscription, I didn't put 25Xtreme on there.

I pulled the drive, ran the "nic_install turbonet" script from the Turbonet CD, it said I had to kill initrd - then PUT THE DRIVE BACK IN THE T60 and boot up. After a reboot, and when everything come up normally, you have to pull the drive again, run the nic_install script again, and set the IP, etc. as needed.

This worked for me.

That's pretty much what I did, but it never told me to kill initrd. I was just told that I had to force a PROM flash, so I did that. Did you run kill initrd before installing the drivers, or afterwards?

I didn't specifically flash the PROM. Just ran the nic_install, it asked to kill initrd, then I put the drive back in the T60 and booted it up as per instructions. Pulled the drive again, put it in my PC, and ran nic_install, at which point it didn't say anything about initrd, just showed me the setup info (IP set to DHCP), I accepted it and completed the install. Pretty straightforward, and I can telnet, ftp etc. without problems.

I got something similar the first time round. But I have just popped the drive out of the Tivo again, and put it in the PC. Ran kill_initrd on it, and it says that initrd wasn't found - I guess it was already killed. I'll try and do a nic_install turbonet on it and see what it says, but my guess is that its going to do the same as before.

From what I can see, the problem isn't that the Turbonet drivers and card aren't installed and working, but the problem is that something is stopping the Telnet daemons from starting up when the system boots.

I'm going to try and run 25xtreme on it and see if that helps it retain its rc_sysinit without disruption.

Problem solved.

It would seem that my unit was working after all, although its hard to really tell because I ended up 25Xtreme'ing it, then adding the Kraven mods, and then realizing that it wasn't starting anything to do with the networking, or telnet daemons, etc. because I didn't have it run the rc.remote-login script.

Once I manually started that script, all work fine. Go figure.
