I have a extremed-kravened Dtivo. If I add Turbonet will my software get upgraded to 3.0. If so, is there a way to avoid that?

Generally speaking it won't happen.

1) kraven's update defines the ethernet device as net0, the tivo tries to dial out over eth0 and when it can't find it moves on.

2) you can also set an invalid default gateway for your tivo, so that it doesn't know how to reach the outside world.

So let me get this straight. Directivos really don't benefit from Turbonet, except that I'll be able to access the Dtivo over my network and make changes that way. Program data will still come from satellite etc., and by adding Turbonet it really will not update my software.

I don't want my software to update, I like my Dtivo just the way it is....

One other question: Does Kraven also add the Showcases?

Yeh, but how do you get the DirecTV program listings, if you can't connect to the outside world? Doesn't this come through the Daily Call or Internet equivalent?

Standalone Tivo's get their guide data via daily call.
DirecTivo's get their guide data via the satellite feed.

The biggest reason for the turbonet card is Extraction. The speed you get off of the turbonet is MUCH greater than over the serial connection (which is good when a 1 hour recording can be upwards of a gig in size.)

With turbonet can you extract the recording and burn to dvd?

Yes, turbonet is a vital part of the system.

You also need to load a noscramble.o module to prevent the recordings from being scrambled (so they can be read upon extraction.) any recordings made witout this module loaded cannot be extracted so if you are just starting out get it loaded right away and you will be set.

You should also venture over into the extraction forum and do some reading there on things like tytool which is the software you will be using to extract from your tivo.

Also in that forum is advice on authoring dvd's etc.

Have at it! :)

I am very new to all of this. But had no problem installing Xtreme software, My question is about "kraven upgrade". From my understanding I don't need to buy TurboNet to use Kraven pack.

Am I on the right track?

Question is, why do you want to install Kraven's update if you have Turbonet card? Most of what it does is enable networking, and start up a bunch of services you won't need. Is there something specific you want it to do?

You don't have to have a turbonet card to install Kraven's update.

Kraven's installs alot more than just networking support for the tivo. It includes things like, vi, noscramble, noppv, some fine utilities, and a bunch of other things I have not had to use yet.

Some people install Kraven's update as a quick fix to get their networking off the ground ( you don't have to pull the drives from the tivo,) but it does install several other things along with it.

If you are more concerned about exactly what is going on your tivo, many people choose to install just the turbonet drivers using the software available from 9th tee (I think.)

Thanks Zabs, I'd like to use the software to remove noscramble option.

BTW, if I want to install Extreme software 2.5 over 3.1 version will it erase all my previously recorded shows?

Another words if I can't install it on top of the regular Tivo software than I'll be forced to format the hard drive. Is it so?

Thanks

You will lose all of your current recordings. If you haven't set noscramble there is no way to download them either.

To answer the original question:

No, installing Kraven's won't force a software update, but it might not prevent it with a Turbonet attached to a DHCP network with an internet gateway.

If you want:
- Kraven
- Turbonet
- network
- but no possible software update
I suggest you disable DHCP on the Turbonet and make it a static IP without a gateway
