Greetings,

I recently picked up two Philips DSR6000 DirecTV TiVos off ebay. The auction listed them as "as is", and "not tested at all", but were going for $80 each, and the seller had relatively good feedback.

I took the risk, and of course, after buying two of them, I found that they both had serious problems. One of them has RAM chips in it, but they both have burn marks on them, and chunks missing from the chips. The burn marks don't appear to be on the motherboard itself, so this one MIGHT be salvageable.

The 2nd one actually has no RAM chips in it at all. The seats for the chips look fine, no burn marks, no damage, etc.

So does anyone know where one could pick up 4 RAM chips for the series 1 DTiVos? I know 9thtee.com sells RAM for TiVos, but the chips are different on the DTiVos, and 9thtee.com only sells RAM for Series 1 standalone units. I e-mailed them to make sure, and they suggested trying the forums. :)

So, anyone know where one could pick these up? I have a friend who is good with soldering, so I'll have him do the dirty work, but I need to find the chips first. :)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Try calling Crucial (with a chip in front of you). I suspect you're wasting your time. Sounds like the MB was toast and the seller pulled the RAM off the MB to sell it separately.

Like I said in the original post, the memory that 9thtee.com sells is for standalone tivos only, the ones in question are DirecTV TiVos, which uses totally different memory chips.

My bad - Sorry.

Both standalones and combos (series 1) use 4M x 16 (8 MB) memory chips. The standalone has 2 and the combo has 4.

9thtee lists the reason for the memory upgrade being standalone only as being due to the combo already having a full complement of memory chips - no room to solder more in.

I suspect they both use the same type of memory chips, but from different manufacturers.

If you want to be sure, you can look up the specs for the chips in your combo, and compare them to the specs for the standalone chips. There is a very good close-up photo of a standalone memory chip on the 9thtee web site, which can be used to identify the standalone memory chip.

You could replace the motherboard. http://www.digitalrecorder.tv/services.htm 249.00. But at that price you can pick up a new (refurbished) one at american satellite.
