I have tried 3 different brands of USB ethernet adapter (SMC, Netgear, and 3com). Where other forums and 9th tee say the 3com should work. Some of the adapters get an IP - I can see from my routers DHCP table. But the 3com just blinks constantly.
Any help is much appreciated.

are you trying to do updates via ethernet or bash? to do updates via ethernet, you need the #401 dialing prefix as described on AVS.

Yeah just trying to use it to update the guide.
I'm using ,#401 as the dial prefix.
I've also opened up port 123 on my router for the tivo box - as suggested by some. But since the hardware really isn't responding correctly (usb adapter)

I am having a similar problem with a SA series 2. I bought the USB LAN card (Linksys) from 9th tee, hooked it up and the lights don't even illuminate on the adapter. I changed the dialing prefix and attempted to connect, but it won't work unless it is hooked up to a phone line. After rebooting the machine via the remote and even unplugging it (in order to add an extra hard drive) the lights on the adapter still won't illuminate. Anyone have an idea of what to try to make it work? I know the lan line works because I have had it hooked up to my laptop in the past. ANy help would be appreciated.

Actualy I had a similar problem using the 3Com USB adaptor on my Series 2 Tivo. I found the issue was with the cable between the Tivo unit and the hub. Mind you this cable works with every other card in my house so .... its still a bit of a mystery but when I switched cables everything worked fine again.
I would suggest going and getting a cheap CAT5 cable and trying again. That solved my issue.
Good luck to you!

I used the Linksys 100m I think it was and got up and running with only two reboots.
I hooked up the adapter and changed my setting to ,#401 and rebooted my TiVo. test call failed.
Rebooted my router, test call failed.
Rebooted my tivo one more time and success!
The whole time the lights were lit up on my router and the adapter.
Good luck hope this helps.
