Multiple Locals

I'm pretty new, but I've successfully installed 25xtreme and the 252 xplus upgrade. I have a subscription to my locals, and have them working fine, and tried to add another market nearby (I'm in Boston, tried to add New York). The channels show up, but I get various 'you don't have this channel' messages onscreen. I've seen various mentions of 'local bytes' and 'guide bytes', but this appears to be an HU card programming thing, am I right? Is it possible to get other local channels without a hacked card? Thanks.

Directv will only allow you to view one locals market.

Then how are all these other people getting multiple channels? With a hacked HU card?
