Ok got SA SVR 2000 up and running on network. I have, telnet, FTP and Webtivo installed and now want to go to the next step, Video extraction and recording. Have broused threw the extraction thread but I'm really confused. Hopefully someone can answer my few basic questions:

What is the easiest software to use to extract video from tivo. Have read about people using MFS Stream with Tivoweb and others using tyremux. Is tyremux the same as tytool? I will mostly be extractining movies.

After i do finally extract video what is the best software to use to convert extraction to a usable format so i will be able to burn to a DVD?

Finally, I know just enough linux to dangerious. Is there any step by step how to's that will allow even a lamer like myself to accomplish the above?

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions you may be able to offer.

Tytool is the hands-down easiest tool for extraction. There are several options for splitting the tystream but tytool can also split on the fly. I find this the easiest method to use. However, if you have any temporal GOP errors in the extracted and split tystream, you might want to extract in tystream mode using tytool and then split using olaf's tydemux utility. It will fix any temporal errors during the splitting process.

I agree, Builder, someone really needs to write an impartial how-to delineating all the tools and their pros and cons involved with video extraction. It's strange that not one single TiVo owner would have done so by now.

That is because there is not one "right" way of processing tystream for end result.

Some people use tytools to split on the fly, others use tydemux to split the ty file after it is extracted.
Some people go right from IfoEdit to burning to DVD, some from Spruceup, still others prefer Maestro.
Some people want menus for multi-show dvd's, other's don't care.
Some people edit out commercials, some skip over them with menus.
Some people transcode the streams.

There are multiple programs for muxing, demuxing, converting, transcoding, editing, authoring, burning, etc. I dare say there are very few people do the process the exact same way as another. Also many people have different processes based on what they are putting on their dvd (whether the content is going to be a movie or tv series, etc..)

There are just too many variables to write the "one guide to rule them all." :D

This is going to sound harsh (though I hope you won't take offense,) but no one is stopping you from writing your own detailed guide, outlining the software you use etc.

I think if you browse the extraction forum enough you will find several people have put down the general steps/programs they use from start to finish.

Cheers!
