I am thinking of purchasing the TurboNet but what exactly are the advantages except for updating via internet? Can i extract the streams via my computer?

yes, you can extract streams over tivonet/turbonet. you can use ftp, telnet, tivoweb, and a number of other net enabled utilities

Yes there are. In fact, there's a whole forum here dedicated to video extraction from a Tivo.

Checkout "tytool" and/or "tydemux"
Tytooll will actually allow you to pull off the ty streams from your tivo (and give you the option of splitting the ty stream into a usable .m2v and .m2a [mpeg2 video and audio] files.)
Tydemux is an alternative splitting software that will split already extracted *.ty stream into .m2v and .m2a files.

If you are interested, definately follow the Cap'n's advice and check out the extraction forum. There is much reading to be done, but it's worth it.
