View Full Version : Editing Bitrates for Quality

On the bitrate topic, how does TiVo determine what bitrate/resolution to record Live TV? For instance I have a SA1 and have set it up to use only Satellite. Will TiVo just record at the DBSBestMAXBitrate? I have save disk space turned off.

I'm attempting to tweak my res/bitrate settings. Since I have upgraded to (2) 120GB drives, space is not a concern, only quality recordings. Although the encoder chip specs rate the chip at 25M, there is no way the TiVo can process the data this fast. DVD is maxed at 9800K which is the quality I'm looking for, but still that bitrate seem awfully high for TiVo to handle. I was thinking in the range of 6400K-6656K for MAX and keeping the res setting at 4 (544x480). I never use any other setting to record, only MAX.

I should add, I'm not too concerned with overheating the chip. I have installed 4 heatsinks on the 4 main chips and attached them with artic silver. Also, I have swapped the stock fan with a much better fan averaging 50cfm and have also installed 8 more mini fans throughout the TiVo. The temp has never gone higher than 32C. I wanted to increase the life of the chips and boy, does that encoder and decoder chip get hot.

Has anyone else had good results tweaking their resources? If so can you post the before and after and what, in your opinion, the settings changed? ie. less artifacts, less blockiness, no "fireflies" around text, etc.

Also back to my first questions, is the Live TV bitrate hard coded, or can this be changed?
