I just got a new virgin T60, plus TurboNet card, and two 120gb drives. I am ready to hack, but there are lots of different hacking packages, and I'm wondering which is the best/easiest.

At the bare minimum, I want the upgraded space, TurboNet adapter working, and bash prompt + TivoWeb. I assume if I install the 2.5extreme image plus the TurboNet kernel module driver (does it come already with the 2.5exteme image, or do I still need to copy it?), I will get that.

But is 2.5extreme the best/easier/most full featured distribution, or are there others I should look at?

BTW, I activated the Dtivo already, but I have no problem replacing both A and B drives with a virgin image. Does that mean I can avoid a separate backup and just put those T60 drives into the closet?

It all depends on what you want the Tivo to do for you. If all you want is the features you outlined then you can set up each one individually. 2.5Xtreme was originally developed as an upgrade to the 2.0 software that was current at the time. 2.5 enabled the dual tuners which had been dormant prior to 2.5.

The extra bells and whistles (i.e. Turbonet drivers, Tivoweb, etc.) were introduced in Kraven's upgrade to 2.5Xtreme. I haven't really followed any of the later upgrades to see what they include but 2.5.2 may include these extras as well. I have no interest in upgrading to 3.1 as my DTivos ain't broke so I don't intend to fix 'em. You'll have to research these upgrades on your own.

One thing to keep in mind that if you perform any upgrades and maintain a phone connection, any upgrades will most likely be deleted or overwritten if and when a new software version is released. Your DTivo will automatically dial in and download any updates.

This is the main reason why I've stuck with 2.5 although there may be added benefits with an upgrade to 2.5.2 or 3.1. I don't connect my DTivo to a phone line even though I have legit subs to both DTV and DVR services.
