I've purchased a used DSR6K that has the 3.?? software which will not allow me to use a HU card. My question is if a use extreme 2.5 and redo the hard drive with this, will this allow me to use the HU card or is the receiver winked so that I can't ever use a HU again??
The 2.5.X version of the tivo software had no restriction on the Period 3 access card.

zabs, I don't think that answered my question. I already know that the 2.5 will support the P3, and I know that the 3.1 will only support P4. My question is if the receiver has taken the 3.1 upgrade or presently running this version of software can the hard drive be reformated and install 2.5 so that I can use a P3 on it. I'm unsure if the reciever has been winked or is it only a software issue?

Yes you can go ahead and run xtreme 2.5 on the hard drive that already has 3.1 and you should be able to go back to using HU again.

My DSR6K uses a P4.
Can I use 25Xtreme on a P4 and still have TV?
Thanks

I'm going to guess the answer will be yes, but if you still operate with a phone line plugged in your receiver will mostly take the update to 3.1 and this would put you right back where your at now. If you want to make it where you don't want to use a phone line then use xplusz and us the update for either your present software or for 2.5
If you looking at using a HU card then you will have to install extreme 2.5

My goal right now is to upgrade the unit to
80 G and start playing with extraction. HU may be in the future...
I had not thought of the fact that it take the update again... Leaving the phone line unplugged will prevent this?
I thought Xplusz was enabling backdoors, does it mod the log files?
Thanks.

From what I've read the update will happen with the phone line hooked up.
This was copied from another post, this is just a short list of things that Xplusz can do, download the file and read the readme for more options
As stated in the readme, nothing is activated by default after the xupgrade is done. Refer to the readme for activating the functions with xPlusz commands. For example, run #43,1 for telnet, #45,1 for tivoweb, #46,1 for tivoftpd, etc. Reboot if you change these types of options that need to be started at boot-up.
Here's some of the functions explained:
NOPHONE - allows your TiVo sub to continue to remain active without a phone connection (also controls the logs).
ADDLOCALS will allow you to add multiple sets of locals (mvchannels).
T30SS will automatically set 30 seconds skip feature on each reboot.
NOPPV will reset the PPV indicator on PPV channels at daily call.
FIXDEMO will reset demo mode periodically (default every 3 mins).
EBD will automatically enable backdoors on each reboot.
CALLERID will display caller-id on screen (phone line required).
The batch save feature will allow you to save multiple programs to VCR.
TIVOTITLE will change the title of shows adding the description.
TEMPMON will monitor the TiVo's temperature and issue an alert on the screen if the temperature exceeds a threshold you specify.
NOSDD will help you further opt out of TiVo's automatic software downloads and changes to your DirecTiVo unit. It is designed to prevent any type of software download/update whatsoever, including (no way around this) the showcases and tivolution magazine.
Others are (they should have obvious meaning):
TELNET READONLY TIVOWEB TIVOFTPD NOSCRAMBLE SMBFS NFS
