Write own SA Software

Ive been following the tivo scene for a while and i have seen lots of people spend time working on hacks to the tivo software....trying to extract streams/parse slice data. Im curious why no one has put in an effort just to write a new user interface/system software from scratch. just treat the tivo as a machine/pc and write a new linux based system software. im sure there are tons of issues trying to get hardware drivers, etc...i dont know. i was just throwing it out there wondering if anyone has tried this?
