I have read and read but am stumped. Please help with the following…
I have a T-60 that has 2.5 on it. I have placed the 2 120 hds back into the Dtivo and have watched TV for a while. I read that if 2.5.2 is placed on the tivo, then Kraven update is not required.
So, I downloaded Xtreme2.5.2. Got this file … t60252x1.mfs. The instructions for “Xtreme 2.5.2 upgrade from bash” state :
1. backup your DTiVo hard drives
2. use WinImage to extract 2 files,
v252.tar and upgrd252.tcl in the upgrd252 directory.
Where are these files? – I only have the above named file and if I use WinImage, it won’t do anything to this file.
3. transfer files v252.tar and upgrd252.tcl to /var/hack.
(Note: v252.tar is about 14MB and takes about 30 mins to rz send at 115200)
How do I transfer files to the Dtivo?
4. enter:
cd /var/hack
./upgrd252.tcl
5. this will run for several minutes and reboot to v2.5.2
thanks for the help.

Just unzip (or unrar) the files to a directory on your computer. From a bash prompt, make sure that you have the transfer speed set to 115200 (stty 115200, you'll lose the connection to the tivo until you reset your terminal emulation program ie teraterm) move to any directory within the /hack directory (could be any I suppose, but things in hack don't get killed off) and I believe you need to chmod +x the files. You could chattr +i too, if you want)
After that run the program like you indicated in your post.
Good luck,

what should I use to unzip it. Unzip doesn't work and neither does WinImage. It is a ".mfs" file. How do you unzip that to get the listed files? Thanks

The file you are talking about is just a backup of a 2.5.2 system. You need to restore it just like any other backup. It is not supposed to be moved to the Tivo and then run.

wow , now I am really lost. so where do I get v252.tar and upgrd252.tcl? And after I get them, do I download them to the directory? Also How do you restore a backup? - Am I asking stupid questions? I feel totally in the dark. Is there a more comprehensive basic guide that I can use to understand how to do what I am asking? I have looked everywhere with no luck.
Thanks

I don't know where Superzap's 252 upgrade is these days, I didn't see it on tivoweb. Basically you have the directions for his 252 upgrade, and the file from his full 2.5.2 backup. Read the instructions for mfstools to see how to do a restore. It will wipe out everything on your hard drive. The 252 upgrade was designed to do an in-place upgrade I believe. Best to ping SZ himself to get the skinny.

Read the xtreme upgrade thread at the top of the forum.

I read that forum and read it again but still am having trouble getting started. I did the Xtreme 2.5 on the t-60. Now all I want to do is the 2.5.2 but some of the steps are so criptic that I can't seem to make any sense of them. Any help from you all would be appreciated.
Thanks

Why don't you let us know what specifically what doesn't make sense and maybe someone can help. First choose a method from the readme that best suits your needs.
If you're trying to extract the 2 files, first open the xupgrade.iso with WinImage. You should see a list of files and folders. If WinImage isn't working for you get another copy of the WinImage utility. Open the upgrd252 folder and right click on the upgrd252.tcl file and choose extract. Repeat for the v252.tar file.

I had the same issue with winimage and the .iso:
1. Open winimage, then choose file, open xupgrade.iso
2. Drag the UPGRD252 directory to your desktop.
3. Transfer the files in the directory via instructs above.

It would be so much easier to just pull the A drive out and use the iso cd. Takes 30 seconds tops, compared to half an hour or more through serial, and is easier for those who are new. If you can do 2.5, the upgrade is the same exact thing, takes 10 seconds to complete and runs the same exact way. All you need is the A drive, and then your done. Do a clear and delete everything afterwards to get your locals..................

Try:
chmod +x upgrd252.tcl
or
tivosh upgrd252.tcl

I can't even find the bootable 252Extreme ISO. I can find a 252 ISO but when I burn it, no boot? And I know I have everything set right in the BIOS to boot from CD because MFS tools will boot. The problem is that the ISO does not have to correct files in the root directory of the CD in order to boot. Do I have to pull certain files to the root in order for it to boot? If so, why isn't this already done? SOOOO confused.
