View Full Version : Just a few ignorant (not stupid I hope!) questions

I just bought 2 (one used, and one new) T-60's. On the used one I finally Xtreme'd the HD with 25Xtreme, after I xtreme'd it, it appeared to work fine except that it would reboot every 5-10 mins, and the remote control didn't work. So I decided that it could be something wrong with the USED T-60 and, I put the Xtreme'd HD into the new T60, now the new unit says "Cannot Boot Kernel". So now I have my questions that I don't believe that I've found answers to using the "search" button
1. Once you Xtreme a HD and powered up the ird, can the HD be transferred to another ird without any modifications???
2. Can I 25Xtreme a virgin HD, or should I 2.0 it first???
3. After I'm done Xtreming a HD(and get decompression failure at 93%) is there anything else that I have to do to get the ird to function properly??? (I'm not talking locals or nothing, just Tivo features)
3. The remote control thing is strange, is there some hack that needs to be done to get the remote to work??? (I've tried both remotes, and changed batteries)
4. Last but not least, is there a reason that the 25xtreme.iso will fit onto a Maxtor 40GB HD, but not a Quantum 40GB HD (Target Drive is too Small!!!)
I'm pretty sure these are common problems, just a newbie trying to weed his way through!

I only have a second to respond, so forgive me if this is incomplete or if I missed something.
1. No, not easily. The serial number needs to be cleared(clear and delete everything) & a unit that hasn't been extremed hasn't had the prom flashed. This only happens when the drive is first put in a Tivo, I don't believe that it happens again if you move it to another tivo.
2. Yes. Virgin is fine.
3. ?????? Don't have an answer
3.(b). The problem appears to be that you are using a philips/hughs image on a Sony. You need to find the T60 version of xtreme.
4. Don't know. It should work? The xtreme image came from a 30 gig drive. If you switch to the T60 version, you may have a problem? Not all 40 gigs are the exact same size. You need a drive that's = or bigger than the drive that the image was taken from.

Thanks for not saying "Boy, those were stupid questions!"
#1 your answer makes sense.
#2 That's what I thought.
#3 I thought that there was something esle I was supposed to do after the 93% error.
#3b once again that makes sense (where other than pitou's site can I find a T-60 iso hopefully in ftp format???)
#4 I'll keep at it and post my results.
Once again, Thanks Bro.

1) two aspects. if the unit has been xtremed before, then you can move hacked images as you wish, but there will be the serial number issue (Error #51). you can clear that with a clear & delete everything, but its better to just re-xtreme. if the unit doesnt have a hacked prom, then the unit probably wont boot since the kernel image of 25xtreme is modified

Now I know one reason for "Cannot Boot Kernel"
Another question, what is a kernel? and or is there a dictionary/glossary for some of these terms?

This doesn't sound good. Maybe if you had a sony image, it would work correctly? I'm suprized that the thing boots at all with that error. I don't know where you can get a T60 image. Check the How-To thread in the DTV forum above. Otherwize, just do a search for (T60 and xtreme and image) or (Sony and xtreme and image). Or (sony and xtreme and file)

Ok the only T60 images that I found that were downloadable in a .ftp format (don't you just hate dial up modems!) were the ones at pitou's site, the one included in the Sony t60.zip file says it too large for my 40G HD's, and the other one is a .mfs.
So now the question is what is the difference between a .iso and a .mfs (how would I go about applying the.mfs?)

I've checked out framethrower's site, my only question is, how do you download from framethrower using a .ftp program??

You should just be able to click on the T-60 file & download it. You don't need any special files, or programs to do so.

The reason that I'm looking for a ftp program is that if you do a basic (.html or .htm) download you have to stay connected for the entire duration of the download with no interruptions ( that's 15-16 hours with dial-up/56k modem!) with ftp you can resume where you left off. Some site's such as pitou have ftp capabilities, but most don't, and to the best of my knowledge framethrower doesn't support ftp.
