i have an mpg which is 20 minutes and i would like to compress it to Divx but i dont seem to have the proper tools. What do i need...i have lame audio codec as well as Divx and VirtualDub but VirtualDub complains when i open mpg.

VirtualDub does not have a built in mpg2 decoder, only an mpg1 decoder. So, if you want to open mpeg2 files from a TiVo, you will need one of the Vdub mods (dontcha love OSS?) you can get either VirtualDubMOD or VirtualDub-MPEG2 from sourceforge or DeXT's site at http://es.geocities.com/dextstuff/

Added benefits include OGM output, ASF editing, m2v support, AC3, etc etc etc.. great programs both of them!

As an alternative to the VirtualDub mod by itself, you could look into Gordian Knot. I'm not sure what the url is but they have built a nice interface... mainly geared around dvds, but it should work anyway. When it gets to the dvd2avi part, instead of opening VOB files, open up the mpg from the ty stream.

Not sure where Gordain Knot is but if you do a search, I'm sure you'll find it.

simply download this, http://webjory.tripod.com/vb/mpeg2tovirtualdubv174.exe and AviSynth http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/avisynth2/AviSynth_250.exe?download then make sure you have the lame codec and divx and your set. Simply start the program and select the MPG, press "Start Conversion" and the rest will all be done for you!
