View Full Version : 3.1 Revert
With the latest hashing, the DVR thing has been too much to keep up with and I want to revert to 2.5.2. I have doen some checking and it would appear my only option is to redo Xtreme then use an upgrade to 2.5.2. Before I jump in and bite the bullet, is there a way to save my recordings (other than to VCR)?
Thanks,
HUGE

hmm, yer subject sounded like you wanted to revert to 3.1. oh well.
guess it depends on if you selected the noscramble option or not, to not scramble your recordings or not. then when you downgrade to 2.5.2 and if you select the same scramble method. but you'd probably have to transfer your recordings to another hard drive while you downgrade that one, then restore them back when it's done.

I don't think that 3.1 streams will be compatible with 2.5.2, but you can always try. Assuming that you were running noscramble, go download and install rc3105's mfs-ftp, extract every recording that you want as a .tmf, do your downgrade, then reinsert them. If all goes well, they'll be exactly as they were before you wiped your hard drive.
There may be a non destructive way to downgrade to 2.5.2 however, have a look at the installsw.itcl script. I noticed a commented section indicating where they perform some check to make sure that a downgrade doesn't happen, because it otherwise could. I would have done more research on it myself, but I am quite content with 3.1.

It may or may not, nobody has written the software to do so. Theoritecaly, I could *possibly* mod installsw.itcl enough to do so, but I realy have no need :P
copied from installsw.itcl:

#
# FSafeToInstall
#
# Returns true (1) if it's ok to install the given software system.
# This is a safety check to prevent downgrades. Because the on-disk
# structure of the database changed with version 1.2, a downgrade to
# 1.1 is a really bad thing.
#
# This is a generic test that is supposed to prevent ALL downgrades.
# Only SwSystems with higher server id numbers are accepted for
# installation.

This was only to prevent a 1.2 to 1.1 downgrade of course, but from 2.0+ there weren't any significant mfs changes afaik. So what you *could* do, is change the set fSafe to 1, and run installsw.itcl with an older versions' slice files loaded into /Swsystem, and the old version will install itself as a regular upgrade. Whether or not any problems result from this is the question though.
