newbie question

I've read the thread... It's pretty darn cool. I just have one question which is probably obvious. Can I get these hacks working simply by connecting my computer to the serial port and copying files... I'm comfortable taking apart the tivo, but i don't really wish to hook up the drives inside my computer. Please forgive my laziness. Thanks in advance,
