View Full Version : Squashed video, DVD resolutions?

Finally I have made my first (playable) DVD from a DTivo. :)

I have a bit of a problem that I cannot seem to find addressed anywhere on the forum. Basically, when the video plays back it looks like a letterbox movie, but "backwards". In other words, the black area is on the left and right, not the top and bottom. The video seems to be "squashed" into a long and narrow video stream. Any ideas?

My (very simple) extract process:

1) mfsstream extract via tivoweb to .ty's
2) tytools6r2 to extract .ty's to .m2a/.m2v
3) ifoedit95 "author new DVD"
4) Burn DVD-Video in Nero

When I look at the headers on the VOB files I notice the resolution is 720x480, which from what I understand is the correct legal DVD resolution. I've also read that DTivo's extract at 480x480 fixed. Could somehow this be my problem? Is the video really 480x480 but being played as if it was 720x480?

Thanks for your advice!

Further reading reveals that the m2v file is 480x480 as shown in DVDPatcher and IFOedit's produced VOB's are 720x480.

So, it sounds to me that I need to remux the video up to the correct resolution first before I can auther the DVD?

OK, I think it's because my DVD player is a bit older. I've read that newer DVD's (1 year or newer) can read 480x480 with no problems. I guess the new one's ignore the header and read the video VOB's direct. :)
