View Full Version : Why go to 3.1 ???

I know...because it's there....

Second reason, they "COULD" make the old version stop working.

But really, since Ive done it, I've gained only:

"win a trip to germany from porche"

and the posability that my current access card does not pose itself the way it should (Tier 620b and the 299.btl) and we should not even discuss this "NEW" problem.

It's now a slower box. With the new code bloat, why the hell should anyone upgrade ????

I'd re-image 2.51, if I didn't have 200 + hours of recordings.

My box was a bit speedier back then, with all the good stuff turned on!

I'm becoming an old fart, so tell me why to go to 3.1 ???

I don't think anyone is advocating going to 3.1. Quite the opposite.

PS Good to see you posting again, it's been a while.

I finally had a drive meltdown....Lost all of my recordings....Oh well..out with the old, got my season passes down from 55+ to a mere 35. But what really got me posting is the SPEEDUP!!!

Good god, don't ever upgrade to 3.1, and telnet, and tivoweb, and all the crap that's there, UNLESS you use it.

I was at 3.1, with all toys on, and my box was so damed slow....I was used to it, and I mean slower than my standalone with the hacks even :(

I'm back to the old, and I'm loving the speed of it. Hell, I only enaible my turbonet/ftp when I NEED it, and have a script written in Procomm to turn it on ONLY when I USE IT, and turn the puppy off. I keep my box CLEAN now, and I don't even have any helper stuff. It's so cool to hit buttons, and see a responce from the unit, as before, it would DRAG and slowly do it, and 3.1 locked up every 4-5 days. Not to mention the ad's....did I say AD's!!

Don't EVER upgrade to the crap they call 3.1, unless they force us.

If your card side of things are good, there is no reason that you need to upgrade!(local stuff is card related!!!)

I even placed a switch on the prom hack, to enaible prom writes, because I was tired of the reboot loops from the hacking....I'll lock it when I'm done playing, cuz it will place you in a reboot loop with 25xtreme constantly re-flash attempt, reboot, reflash, re-boot.....It nned's to write to flip over to the other partition, otherwise you have to remove the power cord every reboot!

I replaced my 2 80 GIG drives (they were transplanted from my standalone unit) and were way past the MTBF rating. Maxtor SUCKS!

I replaced them with the WD 120 gig 8 meg cache versions. I even got one of those rounded cables from MicroCenter. as it was better than stretching the ribbon cable like a button, and WTH it looks cool :)

I see that 9tee is sellng upgrade packages for the standalone for drives with capacities beyond 133.3 gig's per drive. Did they break the LBA48 addressing issue ? If so, Why only with the stand alone box ?

I can't really justify re-upgrading to 2.52. What does this actually fix ? 2.5.1 is worse than 2.5.2 ?? Please explain why, It's now apparent to me that the best version of Tivo sw is the first "final" 2 tuner version :)

I have NO reason to upgrade, as GREED is the only upgrade they have made!!!

Thanx for the info, scanmano! You probably saved me several hours of aggravation! I know, that greed of wanting the newest stuff takes hold of ya! But your info helped fight it off!! I'll stick w/2.5.2...
How they say...."If it ain't broke, DON'T fix it! HaHa!!

Scanman, what's your system temps like with that WD drive in there? I've got a 60G Maxtor 5400 in mine currently, suits my needs, but wouldn't mind dropping in a Seagate Barracuda to get rid of the drive noise, it's just that those damn dtivos are hot enough as it is with a 5400 drive. Need a quieter fan too, sigh.

I guess I'm in the minority here because 3.1 runs much better on my box than 2.5.01 or 2.5.2. The ONLY downfall that bothers me is the tier-check, but that's a discussion for another forum.

I don't have all of the gingerbread running...only what I use. I don't run XplusZ, even though it is certainly a well-crafted tweak. I run tivoweb, tivoftpd, I have multiple local markets in the 0-99 range without looping mvchannels, I run an automated reboot at 5:am every other morning (no recordings at that time and I'm sleeping so I don't even know it) and noppv with cron. This setup does everything I want it to with much greater speed and stability that either of the other versions.

Perhaps I had some configuration problems with my other installs of earlier versions. But I don't see why 3.1 would make other boxes run dog slow. I get no lag from the remote at all, ever. Even before I started doing the reboot with cron every other day, my box hasn't locked up a single time since installing 3.1. The ads in TivoCentral don't bother me at all since I found out that they use space that is separate from what the DTiVo will allow me to use for recording. Since I couldn't use that space anyway, there's no problem with that. I have solved my 3.1 locals issues to a point that is stable and allows me to record everything I want at the times I desire. Like I said, the only "new" feature that is somewhat bothersome is the tier-check...but that's somewhat minor compared to other issues that I had with earlier releases.

Just my 2 cents!

With the 2 120 gig drives I sit at 54C. Not an issue. And if the card is "correct" the locals pop right in there... 3.5.1 is not dead. It does EVERYTHING I want. and has NOTHING I don't want. To say that the code bloated 3.1 version is smoother/faster, is a matter of opinion. I have ran 3.1 for 4 months, and after the drive meltdown, I don't even want to goto 1.52!

Give a a REAL reason, I dare ya!

Bigger program=slower. Code fixes.... Explain in detail a fault they fixed. Please. I need a REASON to EVER upgrade this box :)
It's not like they are giving us ANY features other than ADVERTISING and RESTRICTIONS!!!

Yes, they can both be "corrected", but WHY DO IT ?

I upgraded after numerous failed attempts to make 2.5.x stable. That, and because I was bored. :D Again, my 2.5.x problems may very well have been due to configuration problems, but try as I did, I wasn't able to get the thing working without occassionally locking up.

As for 3.1 being "bloated," I'd just note that there are at least a couple different releases. Kraven I believe has at least 2 different 3.1 upgrade releases, and Superzap released his own flavor with xPLUSz included.

If I recall correctly, the release I used only had noscramble running by default when installed. I had to re-apply my hacks...at least most of them.

My DTiVo does everything I want it to, as well...and nothing that I don't want it to. And, honestly, it is anything but slow. I get instant response from the remote, NEVER a lag, channels take about 1/2 second to come on after being keyed in (which I believe is due to the playback lag that all DTiVo's demonstrate). I couldn't imagine it being faster, and it is definitely MUCH faster than any of my 2.5.x attempts.

*shrug* I'm just glad we're both happy with our toys, scanman0 :D

I am running 2.52 with the HU card with no probs. If I install the newly mailed P4 card, will I need to upgrade to 3.x ?
