I'm a bit confused.

I understand you need 3.1.U5-01-2-151 to get a bash prompt using the BASH_ENV hack. My question is, if I have 3.1.0-01-2-151, is it safe to assume the prom is flashed to a version that will not allow me to reimage and use 3.1.U5-01-2-151, or can I still install the 3.1.U5-01-2-151 image and get a bash prompt.

I think the answer is, if the version is 3.2xxxxxx then the prom is at a version that can't be used, otherwise I am OK, but I am not sure.

Thanks

as far as anyone can tell, the prom cannot be flashed in place on HDVR2 units, or any other s2 with a 37 prom. therefore, the only limitation to booting software revisions is that the kernel must be properly signed.

as such, there is no current reason that a 3.1.0 unit cant be 'downgraded' to 3.1.U5. i wouldnt let it call tivo, since some claim this as putting you into the 'moron' category. in fact, many (including myself) have taken their unit, which came with 3.1.0, and downgraded it to 3.1.U5.

Thanks - Now that I have a better understanding of the prom issues, if I am diligent about blocking software updates, why should I be afraid of letting the unit dial up? (I subscribe to both Directv and the DVR service, so I assume the only thing I should be afraid of is the unit upgrading to 3.2 and closing up any hacks I install)

Am I on the right track?

Thanks again
