OK I have a hughes hdvr2 and i have upgraded to a 120 gig maxtor and have run the mfstools2 and i get all the way to where it tells me to plug the serial cord in and boot up the unit and I get nothing. It was shipped with the 3.1.0-01-2-151 any suggestions on what to do now??I am very new at this and have read for days and someone said you couldnt get bash using that image. Is that true? I do have 3.1.u5-01-2-151 but i do not know how to replace it in the drive,Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,Beaner

Ok this is the command you would put in to restore the original image to the drive right?mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi /mnt/c/tivo-s2.bak /dev/hdc So waht would i put if i wanted to copy the new image from the cdrom??? and can it be done that way..
I am at the same point as Beaner...I have followed the instructions at the link you posted and I am at #17. Now can you give a hint as to where i may have missed the section to replace my image with the u5?
Thanks in advance.

you can have the backup image whereever, you need to change that command in order to reflect where the file is located. those instructions assume you are using a windows drive with one partition set up as primary master, and that you put the tivo.bak file in the root of the drive. if that isnt the case, then you will need to adjust accordingly. However, if you dont know how to mount drives and such already, i would suggest following those steps verbatim.

you need to make sure your serial settings are set properly. 9600, 8-n-1, no flow control
after it is booted and watching tv, hit enter in the terminal program and you should see the bash prompt.
Thanks Mr. Black....so would my cmd line look like this?
mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi /mnt/cdrom/hdvr2-31u5 /dev/hdc
Would this pull the image from my cdrom(where I have the u5 image) to my HD?
Thanks

you left out the .bak
mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi /mnt/cdrom/hdvr2-31u5.bak /dev/hdc

assuming you mound your cd drive as /mnt/cdrom, and your tivo drive is secondary master, and the .bak file is in the root dir of the cd, and you are using a larger than 40gb drive, yes =)
if you are using a 40gb drive, then you want to remove the -s 127. oh, and there is a wierd issue where some 40gb drives are slightly too small. in fact, i cant restore my .bak to the original drive from the tivo. however, i can restore it to one slightly larger (still 40gb, but actual size is a little bigger)
Thanks for the responses...
To anwser your questions in your response Mr. Black, yes to all and I am using a Maxtor120gb HD for my "test" HD.
Going to give this a shot...I hope to have bash in a flash.
:D
Thanks again folks, I will let you know in a bit.

eh? im not sure what you are talking about. but, if you are asking whether you can just re-image a drive, the answer is yes. you shouldnt need to do anything special to the drive, just start over from step one of the bash_env how-to

check your cables. there are 2 stereo plugs on the back of the unit, one for IR and one for serial. make sure you are plugged into the right one. make sure your computer is set up properly for serial communication.
the steps work if followed correctly. if you have triple checked your work, then try hitting enter once connected via serial in your terminal program. that should let you see the bash prompt

Ok i will tell you what my set-up is and if you dont mind you can tell me what you might think is wrong..
HDVR2 hughes straight out of the box no subscription of any kind yet.
maxtor 120 gig hard drive installed when running mfs tools
I am running hyperterminal program for serial communication. It is set for comm2 and 9600 8 n 1 when i short the tip and the ring it shows up what i type on the screen.
Do i have to be online?
Is there any other setting in hyperterm i have to set?
when i type anything in hyperterm should i see what i type on the screen when it is hooked up to the unit?
Man this thing is gonna drive me crazy LOL any help would be appreciated Thanks

did you set flow control to none? by default, hyperterminal uses hardware flow control. you can check by clicking the hangup button, then the properties button, then configure.
if it still doesnt work, and you know its plugged in properly to the tivo in the right jack, then you probably screwed up during the install process. the bootparam stuff is easy to mess up on, so check that.

whats the next step? enjoy. you have access to the system, so you can do whatever you want to. things you might do would be to drop tivoweb on there, turn off scrambling so you can extract shows (once the tools are finalized), set up ftp, etc. bash just means you can modify files and let you control your tivo's linux environment while connected from a pc.
Well I must say after reading and reading I still need a nudge in the right direction. Ok, like I said I have bash and my computer screen has this message:
bash: no job control in this shell
bash-2.02#
What I would like to ask is what do you do after you get this message..if someone could give me and example I would greatly appreciate it.. ( I really want to learn)...I am very new to the wonderful world of Tivo and I do have some script writing experience, Hu card use, Cmaster use and all the H card days utilities(sle,Pitou)
Thanks to all and especially MrBlack for understanding and taking your time to read this lengthy post.

again, it depends on what you want to do. you have bash access, so now it is up to you as far as what hacks you want to apply. once you know what hacks you wish to apply, then you can figure out how to do them. bash is the first step, not the destination.

How do you transfer files and how do you find the files you want to transfer. Is there something you can type in at the bash prompt to where you can see all the file in it so you can find the directory or where to mount?? Just tryin to learn without going all over the place any help is appreciated Thanks,Beaner

please do not take the following the wrong way:
this site is not focused on how to use a linux system. as such, if you are looking for basic linux or unix tasks, such as finding files, editing them, etc, i would suggest looking for linux tutorials online or for similar books at your local library or bookstore.
the type of information presented here is specific to a tivo. while many of the concepts are generic, the tools and scripts are designed for a specific purpose relating to the tivo. to keep the site on topic, we try to avoid these sorts of questions. while i understand having all the info in one place is nice, that causes problems, because people can't find what they need anymore.
sometimes people post howtos with every little step. if you do a search, you will find some on this board. a search on the internet regarding basic unix use should yeild aswers to your questions. remember, while the tivo hardware and software are special, they are based around a standard linux system...'getting bash' is simply obtaining command line access.

Thanks Mr B...I shall search s'more and do my best to figure this beast out.
If I have more questions, when I am better educated, I would hope to hear your input.
If anyone else would like to input on this subject, I'm all eyes *L*;)
